Are you retired military or do you know of anyone who is retired military who served at least 20 years in the military and thus earning retirement pay? Be on the lookout for a phone call/letter because this executive order grants the SecDef the authority to recall all retired military into service. There is some reporting to suggest that this order is specifically designed to allow the SecDef to address an pilot shortage in the Air Force.

Why do you think that Trump is authorizing the SecDef to recall all retired military into service? Is this part of the calm before the storm?

There was a news item of a looming commercial pilot shortage caused by military demand.

However, it would take a world war to need all those pilots.

The way I understand it, there has always been the authority to recall former military members. I don't know who had the authority to do it.

It looks like Trump is delegating that authority to the Defense Secretary and the secretaries of the military branches.

I don't think being retired has any bearing. I believe any former member is subject to recall.

The report I saw is that they need to pull in 1000 air pilots. That would be about 10% of the current air force pilot roster. If the US military can not get by with 90%, then something really major is in the works.

I appreciate the input and I would need to look into that, but it wouldn't surprise me if there are circumstances where former military faced the potential that they could be forced to rejoin the military.

Why do you think he delegated that authority then? It reads like he knows that recalling potentially thousands of retired military would read very negatively in the public and so he wants to pass the buck and make the SecDef take the heat.

At the moment 10,000 pilots are flying around doing very little. If you extrapolate it would require an infinite number of pilots to service a major war.

When I enlisted 40years ago, they told us we were subject to involuntary recall.

Again, we didn't have to be a retired former member. We could just have been a single-term enlistee, and separated before qualifying for retirement, and could have been recalled.

I do know about the pilot shortage. Many join up for the training, then separate for an airline job. The military should probably just increase pilots' pay.

My post above was a guess. I don't really know who actually had the authority before. I guess it must have been the President.

I would also guess that he just doesn't want to be the one making that decision. He does seem to like to delegate. Insert preferred reason here:

    I found this source: https://www.thebalance.com/u-s-military-rules-for-being-recalled-to-active-duty-3357010

    And this portion regarding retirees:

"Retirees (those who spend at least 20 years in the military and draw retired pay) can be recalled to active duty for life. However, the policy established in DOD Directive 1352.1 - Management and Mobilization of Regular and Reserve Retired Military Members, makes recall to active duty unlikely for those who have been retired for more than five years, and those over age 60.

Before enlisting, know the specific rules for the job you want to do in the military, and what the expectations are for your term of service."

Still uncertain as to why he would delegate the authority.

I didn't know there were different rules for retirees. I'm both over 60 and have been separated more than 5 years, so I'm in the "highly unlikely to be recalled" category. I thought about reenlisting after 9-11-2001.

That website gives good, clear explanations of the rules. Good find!

Trump idea of saving money: “well we could offer more pay and benefits to get more volunteers...nah, let’s just enslave people instead.”

I assume any NFL players taking a knee would have to go to the Canadian Football League where the US could not recall them

But most vets playing football are not taking a knee anyway

So if you serve in the US military as a career, you are indepted to them for life???

    sounds like slavery to me.

If I retire from the military I should be able to live my life in peace.

Non-medically discharged officers have always been subject to recall. I'm sure it is that way for enlisted too.

If you're a officer who hasn't been medically discharged, yes you are.

that is nothing new when I left the army after 6 years of service I was instructed I would be part of what is called the inactive reserve for another 10 years which I could be called back into service

They recalled tons of vets for The Korean War.

    This is nothing new.

Having the authority now being passed on to the military seems like the right move. They know what’s best for them IMO.

No, the standard enlistment agreement only contains an 8 year period during which you will serve. If you are active duty for 4 years, then you could be recalled for 4 years after you leave.

Retirees are a different issue though (See post ~7).

Your first sentence is the reason that this news is potentially alarming.

Sounds like they are getting ready for a war where they are going to be short handed, but they are not yet ready to renew the draft. They want to avoid the draft for now because it would be a PR nightmare.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. It probably does set up a quicker activation process, if it's decided to implement activation. I can't imagine other than a President still signing off on it.

I don't know if it can be taken as a sign of impending doom, or not.

    Could be...

I don't want to be drafted! I can barely work now, and I do NOT work at a vigorous pace.

This didn't happen suddenly. We're actually 1500 short, but this EO allows up to 1000 to be recalled. The magic recall number before was 25 per branch. It's a big jump to go from 25 to 1000.

We should probably ask why, with enlistment incentives and a lucrative skill set to sell to the airlines after service, we can't get the number of applicants necessary. Maybe this is the kind of thing we should expect when we go into 16+ year wars with no end in sight.
