The ice breaker sent out to rescue a tourist ship submerged in Antarctic ice since Christmas Day is stuck en-route to the vessel.
The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, is six nautical miles away from the stranded Russian ship and may take another two days to reach it, its captain has said.
Academic Shokalskiy, carrying 74 people, was recreating a 100-year-old Australasia expedition first sailed by Sir Douglas Mawson to see how the journey changes using new technology and equipment.
But on Wednesday morning, the boat hit a mass of thick ice sheets and today remains at a stand still.

Oh, well, (*)(*)(*)(*) happens. Nevertheless, thanks China for attempting to help.
Lets hope Aussie icebreaker can make it. Sending one of ours way down to South from the North is going to be an expensive trick...

Don't these ice-sheets know they're supposed to be melting? I guess we're gonna have to send Al Gore out there to tell them what's what!

Send a balloon, just like in the old days. Success will depend on the wind rather than ice currents, if ice is the problem.

Russia should have just nixed the international goat show and sent one of their own Nuclear Icebreakers to show everybody up.

The Aurora Australis has the highest icebreaker rating in the southern hemisphere, so if she does not get through, I guess they will airlift people out, supplies in and wait for the thaw over the next few months

It isn't just its' mechanical ability to cut though the ice but,
I imagine they rev up the nuc reactor(s) <voom voom>
using both heat and mechanical forces to break through the ice.

Let's fact it, the Russians have a knack for building the biggest, heaviest pieces of equipment.
    Rockets. Cargo planes. Icebreakers.
I understand :flagus: outsizes them at the size of our dinner plates and portions :blankstare:

There are odds the greatest nation on Earth, shining city on the hill, the land of free or whatever else Muricans call themselves might send Polar Star

Well, if it fails, only 50 let pobedy

Can the Russian ships handle 7 to 10 feet (2 - 3 meters) of ice?

Arktika-class shouldn't have any problems with this, but it is going to take at least 21 day to get one from Arctic to Antarctic.

    Nope.

Meh, if the ship is not running low on vodka supplies, all aboard will be fine. Celebrating Catolic Christmas, New Year, celebrating Orthodox Christmas and, don't forget, a New Year by Julian calendar. So they have at least 2 weeks of free time.

And, by the way, Happy New Year!
