It has always been aimed at the under-7 age group, and still is; I'd bet the Beeb can't believe how adults have fallen for such cheap-to-produce teletrash. Compared to Star Trek it's truly pathetic in its gaucheness. When I first watched it, and saw that the daleks were the bad-asses, it was so ridiculously trite in that all a would-be escapee would need to do was look for the nearest staircase. I mean seriously DUH!?? Actually it supports my firm belief that the human race is becoming infantile. If you don't believe me check out the Science forum?

Dr. Who was NEVER aimed at under 7s. It was aimed at kids over 10 - in particular early teens. That should be pretty clear to anyone watching, but it isn't necessary to guess. I realise this is probably pointless, but here is a quote from CE Webber, one of the key figures in developing the original character:

    good news

"Doctor Who: Season 12 Renewal Confirmed by Jodie Whittaker"

    https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/doctor-who-season-12-renewal-confirmed-by-jodie-whittaker/

"it seems the BBC has renewed the Doctor Who TV show for a 12th season, with Jodie Whittaker returning as the 13th Doctor. The British series airs on BBC America on this side of the pond, and while BBCA hasn’t released an announcement, it should be renewed in the US as well, as the ratings are way up this year. "

Good news indeed. She has done a great job as the Doctor. She had some good scripts (and a few indifferent ones) and the support cast worked well. They even managed to find a new & pretty entertaining spin on Daleks.

I always thought of the Tom Baker version of Doctor Who as a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Harpo Marx.

Nonsense! This was only the third regeneration of the series. :D

It changed a lot and lost me at some point. I haven't watched any new ones for a couple of seasons. And I haven't watched regularly since Matt Smith left. Up until then it was still working for me. But slowly you could see more and more that the target audience was children. The original series had a very different flavor to be sure. But I think it is difficult to come up with new ideas. What were cool nerd ideas back then are easily found in hundreds of two-bit sci-fantasy flicks. That said, I thought Steven Moffat came up with a fantastically creative story that continued to evolve for many seasons, beginning with Rose.

You know, the original Dr Who was actually a children's science education program. I've seen an episode once somewhere. His companion was a child and the doctor was teaching basic science. Apparently it was quickly rewritten as a science fiction series for nerds.

Dr Who was required watching for those of us in the physics department, in college. We were literally instructed to watch the show. LOL! We also burned up an entire period of Quantum Mechanics discussing the Heisenberg Compensator, from Star Trek. TNG
