The proof or evidence of earlier civilizations is seen in the water erosion of the quarry that gave us the sphinx and the other evidence found by Schoch the geologist .

You did say something else was at work here. If not created by ancient humans then what was at work?

Most people know of the ancient alien idea and when you say something else was at work without stating what you think is at work this causes one to think ETs were involved. Or magic.

Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars - Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. . .

Before Gibraltar broke open and flooded the Mediterranean valley.

We do know the fresh water Black sea likewise became salty
as well as larger, flooding ancient shoreline communities.

That area likely was a lot more green before changing climate and widespread deforestation in the Middle East.

In 7000 BC, things had come out of the Ice Age and average global temperatures were warmer than they are today, with many parts of the world getting more rainfall.

    (see the Holocene climatic era)

I love Robert E Howard, especially his Conan stories! Haha, maybe he was on to something with his ancient civilizations...
