Meantime, I don't know which particular posh neighbourhood you live in SW, but Australia is FULL of houses at or below $250k. We have many many thousands of them.

 

My Dear, people working the lowliest of jobs, on very much minimum wage, buy houses outside the big cities every day of the week. Even this week. I have property in a town in which most home owners (on much lower incomes than city folk) pay off their mortgages by the time they're 50. Set for life, as they say.

For that amount you can either buy in a suburb, where you got broken into as soon as you leave the house, or you buy that far away, that it makes more sense to hopp on a plane instead of driving yourself....
