The nation of Japan was both ready and willing to send school-aged children into war, for the purpose of killing others, and being killed in combat. It was prepared to sacrifice its entire population for the sake of protecting its own ideals.

    Is that considered acceptable?

Some Japanese leaders were prepared to surrender. Under certain conditions. But certainly not the majority of the leadership and most certainly not the majority of the Japanese people. How many more deaths should the U.S. (and Japanese) have suffered waiting for Japanese opinion to swing around to finally surrendering?

In debating this particular topic you really can't avoid addressing that and other related issues. The two atomic bombings did not occur in a vacuum.

    See points 1, 2 & 4.

Also, Japan was prepared to surrender.

And yet it is the reason for why things went the way they did. Those who were killed were not innocent civilians who had no interest in engaging in violence. Every last one of them was raised to believe their leaders were so right in their position, that they should be ready to go out and die violently to prove such to the rest of the world. They were prepared to kill and be killed based on their convictions.

One poster mentioned NanJing- a good reference for you. Previously the capitol of China, invaded by the Japanese army in 1937, and then proceeded to kill around 300,000 people (more than the nukes) and allowed unlimited rape of Chinese women and girls. This went on for SIX WEEKS.

You many have heard about the wisdom of bringing a knife to a gunfight. What you must do is NOT determined by your honor, your good intentions or anything like that- but by what it will take to prevent your enemy doing to you what they are doing to others. Whatever it takes to defeat such people is what you must do, no matter if it is cruel in your mind. Or of course, you could just allow your enemy to treat you and your family as the Japanese of that time did the people of Nanjing. That way, you could watch your wife and daughter be raped and tortured by dozens of their soldiers, then all die feeling good about yourself.

It's good to be a kind and generous person. It's not so good to not know when you can't afford to be a good and generous person, and have to be the meanest MF in the valley to survive.

Many false claims and fictional narratives in service of the unspeakable.

Why was using the atomic bomb any more terror than any other bombing?

Did you ever hear about the Rape of Nanjing?

What would you be willing to do to stop the Rape of Nanjing?

People seem confused even after hundreds of posts over many days on this subject.

To help folks out, here's a handy checklist they can refer to:

    1) It's never okay to commit war crimes and terrorism.

    2) If you think you've stumbled upon an exception, see 1 above.

What made such terrorism? Explain such. Go into detail and prove the position being presented on the part of yourself as being factual, rather than emotional.

You have made all sorts of claims. i.e. atomic bombs are terrorist weapons. Why are they any more terrorist weapon than any other weapon that kills including a pair of scissors?

At what point do you think that stopping someone or a group of people from committing horrendous acts are justified?

You have failed to back up any of your claims.

"Okay". I agree horrendous things are horrendous. You seem unable to understand that there will be times when force of that magnitude is the only way to survive- and must be your choice because it is the least harmful of all choices Hiroshima was not like Nanjing- a very explicit difference exists here defining what is an intentional war crime as Nanjing, Auschwitz and such places were- and the necessities of all-out war.

Lacking the will do be as strong as needed to survive, you and your family may be slaughtered in a war with such people, but you will be a "Nice guy" for having failed them with what you perceive as "honor".
Might want to note that as the epitaph for your tombstone

What if "terrorism" is the only way to stop greater violence? By saying "terrorism" is "never okay" aren't you then effectively elevating the morality of the greater violence?

And even if you believe the claim that "the Japanese were prepared to surrender" (I don't) you know there have been cases where violent acts have been used to prevent greater violence.

Not that many actually. Never made that claim. Straw man argument.

    Terrorism/war crimes: Never justified.

    Nonsense.

I'm just not an apologist or cheerleader for terrorism/war crimes.

They're just not okay in my book.

I realize others - many others - feel differently, especially when it's their group that commits the unspeakable acts.

Such "what if" notions don't make terrorism okay. "Morality of the greater violence" - interesting phrase, but not something I'm down with.

These bombing were horrendous and unspeakable terrorism/war crimes; inexcusable.

Not a strawman. You have claimed numerous times that the use of an atomic weapon was terrorism. What makes it different from any other weapon of war? Most all of them can kill and some don't even have to be weapons of war.

I went through a half dozen mortar and rocket attacks in Vietnam. Whey aren't they terrorist acts? They all had the ability to kill me. I would have been just as dead whether it was a rocket or an atomic bomb.

I'm sorry to hear that & glad you're still with us. Straw man. Yes. Yes.

Me and my cousin always wanted to terrorize the enemy as much as we possibly could. He was better at it than me, sent their Buddha TDY before he slowly killed them.
