This is one of the things that drives me NUTS about politicians in general, but without surprise, the (D)s are the larger offender. And that is putting some controversial or unpopular idea into a bigger piece of legislation that has more support, thus avoiding even having the conversation about the smaller idea as a stand alone proposal.

The latest is connecting a $15 minimum wage (which is a bad idea) with Covid relief, which apparently Biden has near the top of his list of "wants" for the first few days of his administration.

    Article here.

Why is 15 dollars an hour a bad idea?

Well, since poor people are dying in higher numbers than wealthier people, anything that will improve their quality of life will also help them deal with the virus.

Raising minimum wage is a necessity - the left is about to go on a spending spree, which will probably result in monetary policies that will allow inflation to eat up large portions of our debt.

I agree, and I'm not opposed to raising the minimum and think it should be raised. This is not the best way to go about doing it in my opinion.

For a LOT of very good reasons. The fact that it's inflationary, and will end up with $15 having the same spending power as the current minimum wage, the fact that it will result in more unemployment, and reduced hours for those who still have jobs. The fact that it will send even more gigs underground where the workers basically have all of their rights negated entirely. The fact that the wage increases will roll uphill, too, after all, who is going to take a management position with the responsibilities that come with it when they can make the same money just frying the fries.

But who cares, if they're just gonna bury it into a bigger piece of legislation, that means the idea won't be voted on for it's own merits (or lack thereof), it'll just, well, be buried and voted on regardless.

I think one of the main problems is that we have waited longer than usual, I think the last rise was in 2007 so 14 years. There have been gaps of 10 years before, but I think the longer you wait the harder it is for people to get a grip or accepts the numbers proposed. Raising the minimum wage more often, and at a lower number seems a more reasonable way to handle it. They used to be pretty consistent every three or four years slowly bumping it up. Im not sure personally what is to to little or to much, Im probably more in the 10 dollar range than 15 dollar but its need to be adjusted up. I agree with you it is inflationary when it happens, but money is always losing value with the system we have so it needs to be adjusted as the 7 whatever dollars has lost spending power over the 14 years we have delayed this. I think at some point, maybe not yearly, but it should be at a given time a static minimum wage that is set in a static time period to be adjusted for inflation like social security is. Or in other words we set is at 15 dollars for instance in 2021 and every three years adjust that number for inflation so it is always slowly rising, not waiting 15 or 20 years and start throwing numbers out like we are now.

I think it would be wiser for the government to develop a basket of goods needed for someone to live for a year, and based on the costs of that basket the government can adjust minimum wage up and down every year.
So, instead of using numbers that were pulled from thin air, like $15/hour, we would have real numbers for comparison.

It is taunting. For all those folks who can't get a job because their local democrats shut down all of the businesses they could be employed by....

So conversely you must think lowering the minimum wage will be a benefit? How low would you have it be?

If it is limited to government employees then it isn't a bad idea. A dumb one, perhaps, but not a bad one. But having government messing with how business managers manage their businesses is a bad idea. Either way it contributes to inflation.

No they don't. They reduce government revenue. The government should be able to reduce spending to compensate. Since it won't, it resorts to debt and increasing the money supply to continue overspending. It is that money supply thing that causes the inflation and it is government's doing by choice. Printing money and failing to adjust spending are not related to taxes.

Not sure it is limited to government employess, or that's not how I read it. Its the federal minimum wage.

The cost of good will shoot up with it that is why. A gal of milk for me is costing about 3.15. With 15/hr that same gal of milk will cost close 8 or 9

I dont think the subject is whether or not raising the minimum will cause more inflation than we already have, but don't make claims you cannot back up. Why not 10 or 11, or 6 or 7, you cant back that up with fact or source. $15 might be to much or little, but your claiming it will cause over 100% inflation on a good with no way to verify or source that, its a scare tactic.

That is what it would be for me going to the Safeway I go to. I don't know what it would be for someone down in Pheonix or up in Flagstaff or in Tuscon.

It's a payoff to the Democratic voting base. They want it, they gonna get it. Which is fine by me, that is why sleepy Joe was erected into the White House to drive the Democratic agenda, right?

All I am saying is thats a scare tactic. Milk would go up over 100% in price at your Safeway if we raised the federal minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour. What is that based off of? What calculation are you using? Is this based off historical context from previous rises in minimum wage? Why wont it go up 200%? Or just 50%? I cant verify your claim and neither can you right?

I actually agree with much of what you said. The MW should be updated more often, .... --how about a legislated, mandatory adjustment every 2 years and either tie it to the inflation rate, or better yet, to the rate of increase in the wealth of the top 0.5%. But first it should be raised according to the inflation rate from 1968 and raised using a calculation of the MW as it was then. And that would be $12 to $15 depending on the calculation.
