With Congress being controlled by the Republicans today and that same party largely in control of the White House since Reagan, you need to wipe your glasses clean and realize it's your party that did the damage.

Your partisan, unfounded rants are duly noted. Time to put you on Ignore. ☺

As an Australian there is only one other place I'd like to find myself, New Zealand.

I'm a huge Slavophile (nothing to do with my politics, I just love Slavic languages, literature and culture) so definitely somewhere in Eastern or Central Europe. Probably Croatia, since it's really beautiful and I already speak the language. I'm thinking of applying to ETH Zürich for my undergrad though.

When I grow old I will probably move to somewhere in Southern Europe. Preferably Italy (I am quite an Italophile) and settle in some distant, small village close to the Mediterranean.

I spent the last eight years living and working in SE Asia. I returned home (yes home) to Australia last September. I did a fair bit of travel around SE Asia the last 12 years or so. My wife had worked in Laos since 2003, we both went back to work there in 2007. Couldn't stand being apart again.

We love Malaysia, especially Penang. Great people, food and beaches. Singapore is fantastic. Everything just seems to work well there but it's frightfully expensive. Nice place for a weekend get away though.

I'd love to spend some more time in Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand, in the mountains. We used to fly up to Chiang Mai for a couple three day weekends away each year. Six months or so during retirement would suit me well. There is quite a sizable Australian expat community in Chiang Mai who I'd steer clear of.

New Zealand for the trout fishing naturally, northern Italy for the food, wine and some of the best motorcycling roads on the planet. I'm a lover of Italian motorbikes. Chile and Bolivia sounds attractive also.

You and your wife are fortunate to have travelled and lived in so many places, fascinating, no wonder I post stalk you, ... :)

Singapore was a little artificial for me, probably why everything works so well. Your post just stirred up my travelling spirit... yep would love to go off the beaten track right about now :)

Africa and it's people will always be in my heart but Australia is my home now... and what a home it is.

Travel is the great leveller, especially if you visit cultures alien to you and step outside your comfort zones.

I'd have two holidays a year, one with my wife where we'd stay in upmarket accommodation (which my wife referred) and one where I'd rough it a bit. My favourite part in the world to rough it a bit is in the far north of Laos, on the Chinese border. Very remote with heaps of ethnic groups like Hmong, Akha, Lantien and Yao people.

I have a photojournalism and journalism background. For a few years I was helping a friend (Lao) document the ethnic groups of northern Laos. It was like stepping into the pages of National Geographic. Wonderful experience.

I love hot, dry air and clear, blue ocean. Give me Perth. From what I hear.

Because of the mining boom, Perth has become seriously expensive, although costs have dropped a bit lately. Adelaide is the driest capital city in Australia also the prettiest. It's also the only one not first settled by convicts. Adelaide - City of Churches.

I kinda picture Perth the way Los Angeles and San Diego were 100 years ago. I'll have to research Adelaide.

I say we get illegal Mexicans to move back to Mexico thereby giving US back the State of CA.

Except you don't JUST want the "illegal" Mexicans out.....do you?

    BTW, if Trump is elected?

I'd suggest Australia (the south...Melbourne, Perth), New Zealand, etc.

Fall-out should dissipate around the Equator after Vladimir Putin makes some wisecrack about the size of "President Trump's" "hands."

My Bucket List includes a trip to New Zealand. If it is as beautiful as the scenery from the Hobbit Movies, it'll be worth it.

If I had to live abroad, it would be a toss up between Argentina or Uruguay.

Do expats in Thailand have a bad rep?

Realistically Canada would make the most sense.

    After that...

Nepal. I seriously considered it when I left the regular Air Force.

Lukla Airport, is a single landing strip in the town of Lukla, in Khumbu, eastern Nepal. It is widely regarded as the most challenging airport in the World; maybe get a job flying for Tara Air flying in tourists, to this remote base camp, who want to challenge Mt. Everest.

    That's fantasy anyway.

    Will I do either?
Probably not. I can talk a big game, but these days I'm more of a home body.

No desire to live abroad at this point in the game.

It depends by who. Retired Australians for example are allowed to draw their pensions in Thailand as long as they can prove they have a certain amount in a Thai bank account.

It's the holiday makers who can have a bad reputation.

Like lizarddust, my wife and I are looking ahead to retirement, and are thinking of moving to Ireland. We've been there several times and love it, and it would give us a great base of operations for our prime travel years: "Honey, shall we take the ferry to France for the weekend?"

I'm a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen, which apparently also makes me a Commonwealth citizen, which opens up some extra options -- for instance, a right to abode in the U.K., including Northern Ireland. Simplifies the immigration process.

Our plan would be to stay there for, say, 10 years, then move back to the States when traveling becomes more difficult and we want to be near kids and grandkids.

Timing is complicated, between kids going to college, aging parents, and the like. But that's the dream/plan right now.

Isn't that Golden Triangle territory? Did you encounter any problems?

Not quite. The Golden Triangle is about 130 kays to the south west. I've been in the Thai/Lao/Burmese border region (commonly referred to as the Golden Triangle). Huge Chinese influence in the region. The Chinese are building casinos/golf courses which are off limits to the local Lao (not that they can afford it anyway) but open to rich Chinese and Thais. Even the local currency, the Kip isn't accepted in these casinos.

Where I'm talking about is Luang Namtha province. Still remote, gob smacking beautiful and ethnically diverse. Most groups still practise Animism and Buddhism has barely any influence. If you've ever seen the movie Air America, that's what the landscape looks like. I'd hire a motorbike and just get lost in the mountains.

A couple of years ago, an Australian mate and I got lost on motorbikes in the mountains of Luang Namtha. We always seem to find our way out. We bumped into a Hmong village perched on a hillside, decided to check it out and just take a spell. We heard wailing and chanting coming out of a hut nearby. This Hmong guy came out and asked us to come in. Here was a female Hmong shaman exorcising a new born. Apparently the baby wouldn't suckle. My mate and I witnessed the entire exorcism and felt honoured to do so. Interesting, the mother was only about 15 years of age.

sounds incredible, (pulling chair closer) so do you travel from village to village or do you pack a tent and supplies, how long do you go for, what about fuel and food? Do you go in the winter or is it cold in the mountains then?

You must have some amazing photographs.
