    That's not my experience.
I saw people fighting over toilet rolls as a response to panic created by the media. Similar to what is happening at gas stations in the US right now.
How many true preppers do you think there are? Most people just panic and clean out the shops and then try to justify their actions by claiming to be preppers.

No, those people are just j&rks. We had them here too. I got into a few F2F when I saw people trying to overrun senior citizens. Our stores designated one hour upon opening for only seniors to shop. It ticked me off that was even necessary.

That's not what prepping is. It's more of making long-range plans to be prepared in case of emergency. For example, some of the people in Texas prepped and were able to carry on during the winter storm there. They didn't take more than they should leaving a deficit for other people. It's more along the lines of buying extras all along the way.

I no longer drive so I rely on a friend to take me on errands and do my grocery shopping. When I tested positive for COVID, I self-quarantined for 14 days as per our health department rules at the time. My friend went shopping for me and left everything outside my door. I had her pick up more than I would normally have her get in a routine shop. For example, I got 20 lbs. of rice. I didn't buy ALL the rice the store had. I just bought more than I would typically buy (and they sell 20 lb. bags so I didn't buy up ALL the other size packages).

Unfortunately, decent people are outnumbered by j&rks. They are everywhere and they are usually loud and obnoxious. I avoid those people at all costs. Most recently, this has included my family of origin and life is sweet without their toxicity reverberating in my head. Those types serve one purpose - to teach us how NOT to be.

I think the point was the preppers were not the ones there fighting over TP, they already had a large stockpile.

In the immortal words of former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg:

Anybody can be a farmer. It’s a process. You dig a hole, you put a seed in, you put dirt on top, add water, up comes the corn...

It's a safe bet that most city dwellers would be dead in about a month.

I would say two weeks because they would not have a clean water source.

The liberty America is built on also allows the kind of fools who burn cities and hate police to prosper when fools control government. That's the liberal nature of Americans, we seem to not know when to put the lid on idiotic behavior until it's out of control. We experiment with stupidity, such as is happening in Washington right now. It's an expensive and dangerous policy- and we have reason to be prepared to deal with the potential consequence of it.

Sure, a tiny percentage of the population were prepared for shortages but I'm not convinced that they didn't take part in any hoarding after panic buying set in.
I read about a guy recently who had bought over 100 packs of 32 toilet rolls and was trying to return them, the shop refused to refund him. That's just blind panic whipped up by sensationalist media outlets.
Obviously, if you live in an area prone to natural disasters it makes sense to have a few weeks worth of provisions if you have the space for them but when people have years worth of supplies and barrels full of ammunition that's not logical, it's a mental illness.

Yes, that man bought them with the intention of selling them for a profit.

If the world is gonna end, first thing I'm gonna do is max-out my credit cards, and I'm not buying any rice.

ah! so now buying 4 bags of pasta rather than 1 is hoarding? buying twice as much rum and tobacco is hoarding? maybe you go shopping everyday - but I personally like to make sure I have a few weeks food in advance - and it never hurts to have extra in case the shops have to shut.

for you its hoarding - for me is common sense

I asked you a question based on your post and your response is lighten up?

Ok, you weren't prepared for that question I see.

I live an hour from town so I try to go a couple times a month. Obviously to some here, I'm hoarding because I'm responsible and plan ahead. Typical.

What do you think happens when everybody buys four times as much pasta as they usually do?

everyone starts eating pasta? If anyone on my street ran out - then I would give them some - how is this a strange scenario? I often cook for my neighbours

I've been prepping for quite a while now... I keep plenty of water stored... Hopefully my apple trees will start bearing fruit within a couple of years. I have berry plants that yield quite a bit of berries. I also have my own garden, a stocked pantry with storable foods, a stocked deep freeze (and a generator to power it with if need be), firewood, and plenty of trees on the property that could become firewood if need be. I still want to do more preparation, but I think that's a good start nonetheless.

Refusal to acknowledge the trees when you are in the forest.... must be difficult. Reality all around, and you are still making up your own world.

Some of this is due to experiences and climate, prospects of national disasters etc. And storage capacity. For instance:

Years ago my parents who live a little out of town was hit with an ice storm that kept them home living off what they had. So naturally afterwards my mom designated a storage area for toilet paper, canned goods, water. They have had to dip into it when more winter storms hit, water pump went out and was good to have when covid arrived.

Last Feb we had a freeze that was more extreme then usual. Didn't have water for five days. So guess what I have stored away downstairs? Yeah.... water.

Extreme weather which is commen in many populated areas of US does drive some prepping.

Lots of people prep, they're the folks that survive natural disasters. It's just not an identity outside America's far right.

Prepping is basic common sense. For instance here some time back there was a winter power outage in the east central US and people were out of power for 3 weeks. Now gas shortages in the southeast. Toilet paper ran out pronto with the Covid fear mongering.

    It pays to be prepared.
