Just curious, what would happen if an independent became PRES?

That's just it there is no such thing as non partisan. Everyone that comes here is a partisan of a certain set of ideas. Now they may not wholly line up with D's or r's but they are not the less partisans of those ideas.

Voting is already too complex for many. Ranked voting would create too much confusion, IMO.

Which of the six or so types of ranked voting did you have in mind?

Well I think at some point, you aren't one or the other. For example you could be a person that believes in small taxes, border control but also believes pro choice and gay marriage. What would they be then? I'd say independent. I would say when they are 60% or more for the ideas of ONE side, then they would be on that side (because they'd probably vote that way)

You just described why I've never joined a party. Some of us just don't fit into their tidy little buckets.

The point isn't that you must be a partisan of either r or d but that you are a partisan of some group of more or less political ideas or you wouldn't be coming to a politics site in the first place.

If complexity is the sticking point, then we should just go with Instant Runoff.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting
http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?goto/post&id=1068992191 (Instant Runoff process walk through bottom of the post)

People already know how regular Runoff Elections work, so an Instant Runoff system should not be too difficult for most folks to wrap their heads around. As long as the ballots are sensible, Instant Runoff is simple enough such that there shouldn't be much more in the way of confusion compared to what we have now. And of course we'd then get the added benefit of moderate and or independent candidates then becoming more realistic options for voters to choose and less of all that "lesser evil" stuff...

I think you may be stretching the semantic of “partisan” a bit. In the political arena “partisan” means in accordance with party tenets.

Partisan simply means to be an adherent of... It mentions nothing about a specific political party or any political. One can be an adherent of or partisan of eating healthier and exercising more.

In France, Macron was "independant" (just backed up by most billionaires and their newspapers), he created his parti and got a bunch of opportunists from both the right wing and the left wing. So it depend what kind of "indenpendant" it is. The political situation is quite different in France from USA, because we don't have this two parti system, even if for a long time the right wing parti (they changed their name a lot) and the PS (left wing parti).

So maybe you will get a Macron one day, when people would be too much fed up with democrats and republican, so they could get republicans and democrats in disguise.
