They were not doing surgery except for emergencies. I was scheduled to have surgery in April and didn't get it until late July. It was effectively a shut down. The hospital I use had to lay off employees during that period.

Watch what? Companies do a rapid policy change on November 4? LOL.

This virus does not care about any politics. It doesn't know what day it is. It doesn't know something super important to some inhabitants of earth is happening in early November.

    It just doesn't. I promise.

The virus has nothing to do with it. It is all about politics.

    You have it totally backwards.

You can see what I mean by reading the CDC plan for opening our economy by looking on whitehouse.gov.

We are doing FAR FAR LESS than the CDC has suggested is important for us to do.

And, that shows that the hysteria is being demonstrated by those like YOU who want to IGNORE SCIENCE.

I didn't say "shut down" I said "lock down". No visitors allowed. I know a fellow who is dying of cancer and is lying in a hospice just waiting for his last breath. I visited him 2 or 3 times a week bringing him treats and trying to cheer him up the best I could. He's so full of pain-killers so it isn't difficult to make him smile or laugh. One day the hospice wouldn't allow me entry. Coronavirus. I haven't seen or talked with him since. Last year I got a pace-maker and a knee replacement and a few months ago I went to the hospital (where the operation was carried out) to ask a couple of questions about it. They stopped me at the entrance. I have to contact them by phone. Those who are gravely ill and dying are not allowed any visitors. Are there acceptions to the rule? I don't know. Maybe.

    My mistake. Apologies.

I am so sorry about your friend. I've lost loved ones who were in hospice before passing and it's hard enough without the added burden of not being able to be there for them. I also hope that you were able to get your questions answered satisfactorily.

I was curious about this because our hospital (small town, we only have one) requires us to call the ER BEFORE going to the hospital. Usually, a nurse takes the call to assess whether a trip to the ER is advisable. I'm not sure why they do it that way because all the doctors' office staff are instructing patients to go to the ER for just about everything.

I was admitted to the hospital a few weeks back (going through the ER twice) and was explicitly told that I could have ONE visitor throughout the duration of my stay. A good friend took me there so I had no problem agreeing to those conditions. I learned that she had was stopped at the entrance and had to show ID. They then called the nurses' station on my floor to give her name before she was allowed to come up.

If there are any exceptions, I haven't seen or heard about them. It's pretty strict where I live.

Well, I'll be here when you want to eat crow on November 4, when there are no signs of it magically disappearing.

I agree with you. Knowing you’re dying is one thing (and not a small thing) and languishing away in loneliness while you're waiting is much, much worse, I am sure. Don't most of us want to say "one more thing" that we think is important? You know, our "last words" to be remembered by those we love. As it is I don’t even know if he is alive today and I was wondering if there are any exceptions to the NO VISITORS rule, for example, his wife.

You need to ring the hospital BEFORE you go to acute?!!! That’s tantamount to making a reservation!

So, why were you at the ER?

I didn't say the virus is political. I said the response to the virus is political. Sorry if I confused you. On Nov. 4 we will begin reversing the business closings.

The hysteria won't have any purpose after the third. it would be silly to continue it.

It has to be awful to not even know if he's still alive. I doubt they will make exceptions since everyone in hospice is in the same boat. Can you call him or call his wife for an update? Again, I'm so sorry.

I think they use the "call first" procedure because people sometimes go to the ER for things that aren't real life-or-death emergencies. That way, the nursing staff can determine if it's a matter that needs immediate attention or not. Obviously, that isn't the case for someone having a heart attack or something like that.

I called my doctor's nurse first and went to the ER for a severe backache. They didn't do anything for me. Two days later, I couldn't even stand up. A friend took me to the ER and I was admitted. I was there 10 days for an infection and ended up developing pneumonia. Fortunately, it had nothing to do with COVID-19.

I'm not confused about what you meant. It was sarcasm, because wearing a mask and doing the distancing isn't political. It's a known way to slow the spread & decrease viral load of a highly infectious disease. We've known this for at least 100 years. Partisans are doing everything in their power to make this an election issue. I don't know a single person who has changed their mind about November 4 because of a worldwide pandemic.

Can you think of a single person on this forum whose said, "I was/wasn't going to vote Trump/Biden, but since he did/said/didn't do/didn't say, blah blah blah, I've changed my mind?"

No. Idiot wise, they exist on both sides. Neither team has a lock on adult-like behavior.

I have no contact with him. He's not a close friend I just know that he was lonely so I tried to cheer him up. I'm retired you see and I have lots of time on my hands. Maybe I should be more active on the forum but I don't have so much to say other than on a couple of threads.

I'm happy to know you're OK although pneumonia can be awfully serious. Yikes!
