The New York Supreme Court last week ordered the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to provide a newspaper with a list of the names, ZIP codes, and license categories of all individuals in the city who obtained firearms licenses in 2018.

An attempt to out the gun owners and make them targets for criminals and protesters?

The last thing anyone wants is burglars coming to their homes and places of business looking for guns to steal.

And if government requires the mandatory collection of information from people, how can the people really be sure it will be kept private and secure?

Again? Something like this happened several years ago.

Thus a perfect example of why firearms registration is considered unacceptable.

    On the contrary.
If your name isn't on the list, it means you don't have a gun.
Thus, criminals now know who they can safely go after.

Yes Big Bad Governments target gun owners.
Criminal target those who have been disarmed.

The creation of a database of gun owners should be a federal crime.

Gun registration is not the least restrictive means to serve a compelling state interest.

Exactly. Criminals know where to steal gun and know where to use it.

How would they know who has a license to carry if they don't keep a database? I can understand why PUBLISHING that information should be a crime, but not keeping it. Unless I'm missing something here.

The ruling is for 2018 when they implemented a new system. Criminals thinking someone is not armed may be in for a shock showing up thinking somebody is unarmed (and they are from years prior to 2018 8)).

Once the information is collected a database is created. At this point no one should need a license to carry a firearm.

Americans should be encouraged to own and carry firearms.
Gun Control schemes only encourage more crime and the disintegration of law and order.
The concept of armed police serving and protecting a disarmed public has failed. The entire concept was obviously rather stupid and dangerous from the start.

I agree that gun control is NOT working, but, I'm not sure encouraging the average citizen to carry a weapon is a good idea either. No, I have no great alternate solutions, sadly.

Relying on the police to serve and protect has never worked well. It's just there used to be a time when LEOs at least pretended to want to help the average citizen.

The UK had very little crime when the Brits were armed and the Bobbies were not.
Of course, human beings and their governments will always be very flawed. An armed public will stop almost all street crime immediately.
That would be a good thing, but it would not be a perfect solution.
    There is no such thing.

Why carry a gun? It's fits in your pocket much easier than a cop!

Of course, there is no perfect solution for any of society's problems. Did I hear somewhere that some country's police don't even carry weapons? I was watching a prison program recently and the inmates were basically treated like guests. So, it's clear that some places are able to make their societies work better than here in the US.

I guess that depends on how much you pay him/her to look the other way. ;-)

I have a gun but I only carry it to the woods to shoot. I feel fine carrying my folding knife that flicks open with a finger, it's second nature, like my house keys. download.jpeg

See. I don't worry about people like you. You are clearly comfortable with your weapons and act responsibly.

I'm worried about the people that

    * think they are immortal and go finding reasons to talk themselves into some trouble.
    * are less comfortable with weapons that are unlikely to wield them in such a way as to not have them taken by a perpetrator.
    * about the decline in services for mentally ill people and their immediate access to weapons.

The experienced are a threat to would-be-criminals. The amateurs and hotheads are where the danger lies.

Hell, I dont even leave mine loaded as it's a muzzleloading cap n ball revolver and it's not reccomended to leave a black powder gun loaded due to possible corrosion. I did leave it loaded once for a month over death threats from a close neighbor. When we moved, I shot it empty in the woods (no other practical way to unload it) It was fine. Now if we were having local riots or lots of home invasions...

About the only action it's seen in years is toilet paper wadded blanks on the 4th of July with no pesky projectile to worry over. I did kill a wild hog once. But on topic, I dont see how such a thing can be remotely legal. The vast majority of concealed carriers are rational and responsible

But the court ordered such information is not private by ordering it be released to newspapers.

How many hours of knife fighting training do you have - including knife throwing?

Might be a good idea for the gun owners to carry their gun with them instead of leaving it at home.

For now, the courts hands were tied by New York statutory language that can readily be amended. Just come up with some language and the votes and address this next session.

Because it's so easy to get a CCW permit in NYC.
