Obama/Biden handed over a growing economy. They got a rough start with Ebola, but that's going to happen to every politician, it requires them to do things they don't want to do. But, in the end, they did a good job. And like Bush and Clinton before him, they improved our ability to respond to a pandemic.

Trump has totally bungled the Corona virus, sending the economy into a Depression.

    It doesn't get much worse.

    It ISN'T "MY Side".

I completely detest (and I am 100% non-supportive of) violent protests.

But speaking of being "responsible for so much suffering and chaos":

That is TRUMP'S Doing. And, Everybody KNOWS That.:flagus:

Actually, that is not completely true. Our stockpile was fairly depleted during the H1N1 crisis and was never fully restocked.

Here is a decent article from VOX (link) (I can't believe I just said that). It discusses how the stockpile was depleted and how Congress never funded it's replenishment. When it comes to funding of these things, The President can recommend where he wants funding allocated, but it is The House to prepares and passes the budget.....The Senate that votes on approving the budget....and the President the execute's the budget. Congress, as a whole, has just as much blame as the President does.

The article does mention that this administration should have started to change focus on producing ventilators around January/February. I agree with that in hindsight. However, at that time, even the media was downplaying the risk of COVID. Trump tried to warn Congress of the arrival of COVID in January during his SOTU address....the same address Pelosi tore up.

In regards to the economy collapsing, blaming trump for that is purely partisan. While trump can recommend that State's shut down their economy, It is the Governors that made the call. I would be curious on what you believe could have been done to safe the economy from collapsing.

Are they still pushing the narrative that the feds "instigated the violence" or have they finally discovered shame and stopped pushing that nonsense?

I agree with most of that.

Trump never got with the program... Still hasn't.

A good politician will change course after 2-4 weeks. If Trump had done that, 80-90% of the deaths could have been averted, and the damage to the economy would be considerably less. That depends on how long you think dithering is acceptable, I'd be willing to consider a smaller percentage, there were enormous logistical challenges. Some of which Trump made worse...

Btw, a global disease is a national problem. At least in the real world.

Well....trump can never be accused of be a good politician.

That aside, you did not answer my question: "what you believe could have been done to save the economy from collapsing". Do you believe the "stay at home" orders were unnecessary? That businesses did not need to close?

CONGRESS did not fund the replenishment of our stockpile. There was no vaccine for COVID. There was no test for the virus. Trump attempted to stop travel from China and was called a racist for his effort. His stopping travel from Europe was called too extreme. The media was downplaying the risks. The medical experts were inconsistent and even contradicting each other...and still are. Based on past Presidential responses to National crisis's, I would say his response was average.....i.e, there is always something that people could be critical of.

I have said many times I do not like trump. I understand it often seems I am defending him, but that is not the case. I am just pointing out the irrational "spin" directed at him. I am not saying he was not culpable. What I am saying is that the culpability does not solely rest on trump's shoulders. There are MANY people that are culpable....both Republican and Democrat. To just blame trump more than others is nothing more than partisan.

The countries that succeeded had national governments that worked hard to bend the curve. It's not just a national problem, it's a global problem, which is why the CDC always has teams working outside the country.

If we were to get down into the weeds, there are a bunch of things he did wrong, like the way he horribly mishandled the national stockpile, and left states bidding against each other to get PPE and such. That was nuts.

Trump should have used his emergency powers to ramp up production. The key is testing and tracing. There the pooch got horribly screwed.

The more testing you do, the quicker you can get things under control. The min is about twice what we are currently doing.

One of the country's best math guys came up with a plan. I forget the numbers, but if we cranked up to about 7 to 10 million a day, the crisis would be over in a few weeks. About the time we got to that level, we could start backing down, a week or two later, at the latest.

Front line personnel would get tested every other day. Cops, nurses, fire fighters, trash guys, cashiers, anybody that interacts with the public.

This is science, but it ain't rocket science...

The countries that succeeded were much smaller than the US and HAD a National Government with National authority. The US is not designed in that fashion. We are a Nation of sovereign States where the Federal Government is intentionally limited to enact requirements within the State's themselves....even during times of National emergencies.

The stockpiles were mishandled before he took office. Not saying this gets him off the hook, but he was not the only President that did not have the foresight.

Trump DID use his emergency powers to ramp up production on March 13th.

Certainly more testing would be great. However, it took months to even create a proper testing kit. Then you need the vetted manufacturing facilities to actual make the testing kits. It is easy to say more kits and testing is needed. It is completely another thing to put the logistics in place to actually fulfill that requirement.

    Ebola, are you kidding us?!

Some victory, containing hemorrhagic fever. Stopping the transmission is child's play compared to airborne disease.

    K, ya ready.

    1) Don't get bit by a fruit bat in Zaire. Specifically Eidolon helvum.

    2) Don't get bit by a gorilla in Africa.

    3) Don't get bit by a forest antelope in Africa.

    4) Don't drink the blood leaking from people.

    4) Don't have sex with someone bleeding from their eyes.

Yeah, that was a close one.

An economic retraction during a pandemic, are you kidding us?!

This is just puerile. Not even worthy of comment. No one on this forum believes there's a causal relationship with Trump, not even you. Come on bro, kick the irrational stuff here, save it for the gullible, they don't reside here.

Eh, other than that, nice post.

"The weakness of the Trump administration’s economic response to the coronavirus crisis—much like the failure of its public health response—can be seen in comparison with the United States’ international peers. As demonstrated by the experiences of peer nations, a rapid and coordinated public health response could have contained the pandemic more effectively and reduced the mounting economic losses. Instead, it seems as though the United States is getting the worst of both: the highest death toll of any country and what will likely be the sharpest economic contraction in American history."

    https://www.americanprogress.org/is...mpounded-coronavirus-induced-economic-crisis/

Threat level: "We are still significantly behind the curve in containing coronavirus and reopening the economy for political expediency in the middle of a pandemic, to which no has has an immunity, is absolutely mindless," Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group, tells Axios.

    • "It will only delay a full economic recovery."

    • The bottom line: "Trump is deluding himself if he thinks that he can step behind a podium and reopen the economy," Michael R. Strain, director of economic policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, wrote in an op-ed for Bloomberg.
      • "A warning to the president: Trying and failing to reopen the economy before economic activity is organically ready to resume could have dire economic consequences."

"Donald Trump’s botched handling of the Covid-19 crisis has left the US looking like a “third world” country and on course for a second Great Depression, one of the world’s leading economists has warned.

Stiglitz said that as a result of Trump’s mismanagement, the White House office responsible for pandemics had been closed, funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had been cut, and the US had gone into the crisis without enough testing kits, masks and protective gear.

    • “We were unprepared but, even given the degree of unpreparedness, Trump’s decision to make this about politics rather than about science has meant we have responded far more poorly.”

The opening of the ABC morning show in which they preview coming stories mentioned nothing about this horrific mass murder attempt by leftist. Maybe by tonight they will have brainstormed how to spin it and it may make the news or they may continue to ignore it. Stay tuned.

He did, mainly through communication and presidential request from the nation. For increased production quickly in the short term cajoling, offering incentives or rewarding is the only available solution.

The supply chain is in place, it's long and more intricate than one can imagine. One needs the players in place and the needed materials already committed. ”Hey people, you're doing a great job, thank you. You know the nation is counting on you and the we're running out of PPE, using it fast. What can I do to help? What do you need? Is there a call I can make to break a log jamb? Is there a machine you need transported from Germany by morning? Is there a process engineer that I can bring at gunpoint from Honduras?

    This happened.

Dropping an athoratarian hammer on the issue, taking over control way ahead of the learning curve would stall production not accelerate it.

I mean seriously, think of the specific requirements in what you are familiar with. With PPE I can quickly think of a few issues right off the bat. Running low on thread? Why type? What size? What strength? Who makes it? What fits the machine? How does it need to be supplied? Spools? What size spool fits the machine? To many damned variables to go pushing people around or out of the way thinking one can do better.

It took almost a year to convert the US Auto industry to war time production.

so in a nutshell, he still doesn't actually give a crap about the violence and damage, just that it may help boost Trump votes. You know what would be cool, if the guy just condemned violence because violence is WRONG! Even when these democrats try to do the RIGHT thing, they do it the WRONG way. PATHETIC!

A paper mask is just a little less complicated than an aircraft. But panic over thread is cute.

Your own example works against you, we turned our industry inside out and turned it into a war machine very quickly, all things considered. Sure, there would be problems. There are always problems, that is not an excuse for giving up...

Do you know how the new American made ventilators are working out?

Yes, I do, but please tell us your version of the situation with the ventilators.

    I don't know.

But I am curious, but not enough to go looking. He had a goofy thesis, and it would be interesting if ventilator production helped or hurt it.

There never was a ventilator shortage. The existing ventilators were adequate, and the ventilators that were rushed into production were never used, and they never will be used on American humans, because they're medical malpractice liability nightmares.

The rushed-into-production ventilators will either be used by veterinarians, stockpiled for future emergency use, shipped overseas, or thrown into landfills.
