Oh yes , of course. That's what I suspected that you meant. The issue is marriage equality between gay couples and straight couples. You can say that it just means gay marriage if you like. Who are the others that you want included in marriage that I'm leaving out? Those into pedophilia, necrophilia, zoophilia? Are you calling me a hypocrite? Must you resort to a logical fallacy ? Surely you can do better than that. Or can you?

 

It does just mean gay marriages. It still excludes other consenting partnerships, namely incest and polygamy. What reason is there to ban two gay brothers from marrying? What reason is there to deny polygamy? Calling gay marriage 'marriage equality' is a joke, it's a misnomer. Like if I said, "hey, both whites and Asians have equal rights, therefore we have racial equality!" Ignoring the other races which might not.

Incest and polygamy are separate issues as I have said many times before. Whoever wants to marry their sons or daughters, sisters or brothers have twelve wives is free to make their case just as gay people have. They all have their own sets of social and legal impacts.

No, I pointed out an oddity that occurs when people say things like "we now have marriage equality in 37 states" when they mean "we now have gay marriage in 37 states": it's intellectually dishonest. Despite your multiple attempts at straw men, it wasn't an ad hominem or argument against gay marriage. You can continue to call it 'equality', it's still going to be as intellectually disingenuous as saying that a country that denies civil rights only to blacks has "racial equality". Some people have no problem being intellectually dishonest, I can't stop them, all I can do is point it out.

There, they have taken the unusual step of posting the 4 legal briefs submitted on behalf of the plaintiffs seeking to invalidate the state bans on same sex marriage.

The arguments are succinct and comprehensive. The states are due to reply later this month and oral arguments will be April 28th

Lets see who is smart enough to respond to any or all of these briefs with a convincing legal argument for preserving the bans.

Today's 5-4 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges will likely be studies by legal scholars for centuries. The crazed rantings of Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Antonin Scalia notwithstanding, the decision is a fascinating read.

But it's Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority, and the last paragraph, all 124 words, that is exquisite.

"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
