I thought the right said rich was making over 250k, but when giving out checks rich seems to be much less - is this the rights new standard for being rich?

And there are job openings everywhere. The vast majority of the previous stimulus was not spent on consumer goods or expenses it was saved. We are not at that same point now, the economy is showing strength and businesses are open and people are working. If they want to target these trillions to people ACTUALLY in some need OK but very targeted. There is no need to flood the economy with this "free money" and economist left and right are calling it out. This is PURE politics to win votes.

For the most part I agree with your perspective and should probably just leave a like for your post without commenting.

Apparently the package is being called both a stimulus and/or relief package.
    https://www.cnet.com/personal-finan...-thing-happening-including-1400-check-debate/
Either way supports the same agenda as it relates to the economic impact that Covid has wrought.

I do, however, question the reasoning for giving any stimulus money to those who can already afford to invest in the economy thereby stimulating it. I don’t know how financial stability can be determined except to assume that any one individual earning above $60k should be living satisfactorily. If not can it really be blamed on Covid?

Perhaps I should have just stuck with liking your post. :)

As to the OP, I voted, "No one should be receiving any money." But of course, when they sent me some anyhow, I took it.

If we have so many job openings then why have 10 million people dropped out of the workforce and unemployment is still recession level? I know a lot of people who are having a tough time finding jobs. let me guess, you think its because of unemployment benefits right?

This economic strength came in large part from trillions of dollars in Trump's stimulus payments that increased consumer spending by trillions of dollars.

The stock market began turning around on March 23, during the final days before the first stimulus was passed. That isn't an accident.

The economy still needs help to remain strong and our strategy of stimulus is working, and if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Because they can make as much if not more not working with all the relief that has been handed out. And it went into savings and investing not consumer spending which did not increase by trillions. The market does not look at stimulus as good longer term fiscal policy. That money was small and short lived a one time thing it did not cause this entire rally. And they relief was FAR more appropriate because unemployment was shooting to 14%. Again we are at 6.3% an almost 50% dropped, heading to full employment if Biden doesn't blow it. Bankruptcies are down, people are paying their bills and STILL saving at almost historic rates the vast majority do not need this money to get their life to where it was. The economy needs Biden to stop with regulatory war on business, to stop making labor more expensive and to stop trying to send our energy cost through the roof and dependent of foreign sources again. THEN the economy will remain strong because it is BUSINESS not government helicopter money that makes the economy strong.

IF we are going to send out money I would prefer it not be means tested. By doing so you attach a stigma to it and divide people into camps. IF we give out money to Americans then we should give it to all Americans. When Bill Gates gets his check he can be reminded that, yes you are an American and a part of our system. Just like when the poorest man on the street gets his check and is reminded that, yes you are an American and a part of our system. In the end the amount of money going to the rich is negligible while the amount going to the poor is magnified by their circumstances. We have to many divides in this country, why make more?

America has become "the girl who can't say no," which is probably a forbidden phrase in this Brave New Woke World. When it does say no, to anyone getting anything free, someone will surely say it's racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. And then we apologize.

This is why cancellation of student loans is coming soon, and then free college for everyone else. I don't know why those who repaid their student loans can't demand a refund of the payments they did make.

lol this 'logic' is especially hilarious. It's a bizarre belief that people who are unemployed in, say, Arkansas, should sell everything and move to New York City, since some guy ran an ad for a part time dishwasher and nobody applied for three days. When you're paying $8 an hour in a place like Dallas, well duh, of course nobody applies; that isn't a labor shortage, it's a shortage of people who can afford to live in Dallas and work for $8 an hour.

Most of the stimulus money went to paying utilities and medical bills and buying food for the lower income people, so yeah, it didn't cause a big increase in Cadillac sales or Opera tickets.

In my first 15 years of work I lived in 3 different states. Once I moved 1000 miles pulling a U-Haul with $300 in my pocket and did not even have a job lined up. I got one in three days which I worked at for 2 1/2 years before moving again. And it's more like moving from New York to somewhere else where jobs are plentiful as I have noted earlier.

I was alerted this morning to a Linkedin message from a former customer at a plant is still under construction and about to start up.

    https://www.madeinalabama.com/2020/...g-to-boost-alabama-investment-by-830-million/

Will employee up to 4000 people, here was the announcement

    upload_2021-2-12_18-59-4.png

That's pretty good wages don't you think? In a beautiful part of the country with a low cost of living. And they will train you.

I mentioned last week a VP from the company I last worked for was in town and invited me for drinks and dinner. I asked him how business was going and he they were hiring all around the country and the he had just been at a major candy manufacturer in GA and they were so busy they were trying to start a third shift but couldn't get people to apply again for good wages.

Yea, prove it, give me a link that says most of it was spent on necessities.

Let's do a poll ask "Would you like the government to send you $50,000" and if they say yes send it out.
How about "Would you like the government to pay off your mortgage" and if they say yes let's do it.
How about "Would you like the government to send you an Amazon gift card with $5,000" on it each month, and if they say yes get 'em in the mail.

Just imagine how "stimulated" the economy would be!

We’re in a recession. Many businesses are still keeping people on the payroll and not working but there’s still less nc9me for small businesses. Unemployment benefits are running out and states that have state sales taxes are hurting because of less spending.

Something has made too many of us too interested in free "stuff." It isn't free, and it won't make us happy. I guess if I were broke and had hungry kids, I'd accept free stuff. But this stimulus plan as I understand it is giving EVERYBODY a $1,400.00 check. What is the latest on that? And what good will it do, even immediately? What if people are "still hurting" after the next free check? And some certainly will be.

We have not been in a recession for almost 6 months

    upload_2021-2-12_19-35-18.png

and had historic growth coming out of it so when you get that right get back to me. And consumer spending has been sharply increasing and is being hampered by the mayors who are keeping small businesses closed.

I have not listened to him for years but saw Dave Ramsey on TV yesterday and overheard him say "If a government $600 or $1400 check is going make a HUGE difference in your life and will somehow rescue you then you have LOTS of OTHER financial problems", how true.

If it is for "stimulus" then it should go to EVERYONE and get the biggest stimulus, why limit it? If it is for relief then it should be highly targeted such government workers who have not lost a day of pay, why would they bet getting relief or any other person who has worked at their regular job all through this.

Why nor just have companies load their laid off employees in vans and gas them to death and dump them at a landfill? If a 'free market' has no use for them, that would solve all their problems and you golden bois won't have to be soiled by their existence any more.

IMO, a serious opposition party would be calling for massive transfer of money from the ruling political class and its corrupt failed bureaucracies to the productive working class, AKA almost all American voters. The RP posing as a party of fiscal responsibility is simply not credible.

Start with the education budget at every level of government.

How do you make that leap? They are BEGGING for workers, the free market is BEGGING for workers. We are at 6.3% unemployment. My state of Alabama, one of the "poorest" states in the country is at 3.6% and as I posted companies BEGGING for workers in high paying jobs. So how do you arrive at your question?

Hey another reality, a factual story, refute it. HIGH PAYING jobs available. And if you are sitting around your house expecting someone to come an knock on your door and offer you a job and if you refuse to take the steps to get including moving they get no sympathy and you should not be demanding the taxpayers who do take those measures to send you part of their paychecks.

lol they're begging for cheaper workers and part timers, which are the majority of jobs being created, service industry and warehouse jobs. Companies will claim their 'high paying jobs' aren't being filled so they can get stacks of green cards is all.

That's exactly what happens when some gambler makes a big score in the stock market, money for producing nothing.

False manufacturers are BEGGING for HIGH paying jobs.

As I noted in another thread a former customer of mine, before I retired, while the plant was and still is under construction posted this on Linkedin this week

    upload_2021-2-13_20-56-50.png

That's 4000 jobs at just one plant. Do you call that for cheaper workers and part timers?

A VP from my former company was in town last week and took me to dinner. I asked him how was business and he said it was strong and that they were hiring nation wide. The Division I worked out of in NC which has about 50 people was trying to put on 5 new jobs and they could not get applicants, good paying jobs starting off between $18 and $25 and hour. He said he had just been at a major candy manufacturer in GA and they were so busy they were trying to start a 3rd shift but could not get enough people to apply. It's all over covering all manufacturing. We are approaching 7 million unfilled jobs. As I said in my poor state the unemployment rate is 3.6%.

At this point I think almost all ordinary Americans would support changing the tax codes and regulations to favor small businesses over Big Business. Only Big Business and Big Labor would oppose that kind of reform.

This general approach to the minimum wage has usually been well received by members of this forum across the spectrum.

"So long as organized labor wants a minimum wage for skilled labor I don't think the political class will or should remove it.
Just get rid of it for unskilled workers. Their work, collectively, can be very valuable, but not valuable enough for individuals or small businesses to hire them at the MW. We should all chip in (subsidies from every level of government) to get them into the labor market where they can live independent productive lives while creating a work history that will allow them to rise." Companies don't get green cards. They do get labor certifications from DOL which lead to aliens getting green cards, but that takes typically 6 months. Often longer. And it's one at a time. Nobody gets "stacks of green cards."

They get stacks of H2-B Visas.

    https://fortune.com/2019/07/09/trump-foreign-workers-mar-a-lago/
The resort, which received 78 H-2B visas in 2018-19 is looking to slightly increase the number for the coming year. A separate request by the Trump Organization seeks 14 visas for workers at the Trump National Golf Club in nearby Jupiter, Fla.
