Singapore and DPRK (North Korea) ruling politicians are cut from the same cloth? Singaporeans vote for PAP not out of hope, but out of fear (cowardice) instead. Kiasu, kiasee, kiaboh (scared to lose, die or be in lack respectively: aka cowardice) : all this results in Singaporeans playing into the trap of PAP, so PAP can toy around with Singaporeans as a cat plays with a rat (it's food). Singaporeans are basically slaves by choice who have refused to escape their masters even though every 5 years, they are given the constitutional chance to choose their leaders via general elections, yet every 5 years, they accept warnings and threats that failure to vote as instructed will result in absurd and unjust penalties being imposed (e.g. deliberate though incidental imprisonment in passenger lifts because political pressure is imposed on government bodies to withhold essential rescue / humanitarian services from opposition political constituencies / wards). Singapore is a perfect case to study the stolkholm syndrome on a national scale. North Korea is similar but there are geographic and historical reasons for the DPRK situation but Singapore has one of the world's highest GDP and supposed to have world's best education and males supposed to be military, police/ civil defence trained through compulsory national service. Like North Korea, the PAP government is very cunning and systematically suppresses any political opposition and holds government services ransom in case districts vote in opposition parliamentarians. Singapore is very strict and authoritarian, in numerous ways, but to compare it to DPRK is completely disingenuous. I think a lot of this may simply be Northeastern Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) society culture. Of course, it's difficult for Singaporeans to compare themselves to their muslim neighbors, Malaysia and Indonesia, because that's a completely different type of strict totalitarianism, more religious in nature.
My general impression is that Singapore likes its citizens to be prosperous but in the DPRK it's not a consideration at all.
DPRK did want its society to be prosperous, but when it became obvious they couldn't achieve that, they sort of gave up. After that they substituted propaganda for reality. As long as everyone is being told it is "paradise on Earth" and never hear anything else, they will feel almost as good as if they were actually materially prosperous. Since the Singapore media is always complaining about things (and really rather trivial things, when compared to the problems in other parts of the world), you know it's not like the DPRK.
