I am seeing hard numeric evidence that the Spring wave is passing in most if not all parts of Europe.

Let's start with Austria, the one country in Europe that has been testing the most in relation to its population. Austria, a country of 9 million people, has performed 36 million tests, 4 times its population. One month ago, on 2021-04-014, Austria was averaging +2,600 new cases and 33 deaths per day. Today, 2021-05-014, Austria is averaging +995 new cases and 15 deaths per day. Today is the first day since I began tracking this nation (2021-02-028 ) where its daily average has come under +1,000 new cases per day, and that is not for a lack of testing.

In neighboring Switzerland, a relatively reclusive land and hard to travel with a car, a country of 8.7 million people, just slightly less than Austria, they have only recorded 7.2 million tests conducted, far less than Austria and less than the entire population of the land. Still, Switzerland has moved from +2,200 new daily cases and 9 deaths per day on 2021-04-014 to +1,160 new cases and 5 deaths per day as of yesterday, 2021-05-013, just about half of what Switzerland was recording mid-month last month.

In Poland, a nation that was hammered hard during the 2021 spring wave, a country with 37.8 milion inhabitants and 15.1 tests performed (not a great stat, if you ask me), they have gone from +21,400 new cases and 604 deaths per day on 2021-04-014 to +3,500 new cases and 267 deaths per day today, 2021-05-014, a HUGE decrease in daily cases and 44% of the daily deaths from one month ago.

In Portugal, a country of 10 million residents and where 11.1 million C19 tests have been performed, that country was already on the mend before April, but still, on 2021-04-014, little Portugal was averaging +547 new cases and 6 deaths per day, whereas as of yesterday, 2021-05-013, Portugal is averaging +351 new cases and 1.5 deaths per day, less than half the cases from one month ago and 5 times less deaths.

In Turkey, a country that is actually a part of Asia minor but wants to be in the EU and is also part of NATO, so I am counting it here for now for purposes of demonstration, a country of 85.1 million residents and with 51 million C19 tests performed: on 2021-04-014, Turkey was averaging +55,900 new cases and 256 deaths per day, whereas as of yesterday, 2021-05-013, Turkey is averaging +15,100 new cases and 267 deaths per day, less than half the cases from one month ago. That's far less cases but the death level has remained the same. Don't forget, Turkey is for all intents and purposes an autocratic regime.

In Germany, the throbbing economic heart of Germany and with a population very close to Turkey's, of 84 million residents and 58 million tests performed, Germany has moved from an average of +19,500 new cases and +244 daily deaths on 2021-04-014 to +12,740 new cases and +209 deaths as of yesterday, 2021-05-013. That's 35% less cases and 16% less deaths than one month ago, but Germany is really not doing as well as other nations. However, let's not forget that Germany, where I live, it quite literally the trucking hub for all of Europe. Most everything that travels E-W, W-E, N-S and S-N throughout Europe is very likely to travel through Germany and so it has been really impossible to place the entire country on lockdown. Still, signs of betterment vis-a-vis COVID-19 can be clearly seen in Germany.

All the numbers quoted above are from the 7-day rolling averages for those respective countries, you can see these numbers for yourself at the online excel tables (see: sig-file).

In no land in Europe are things worse than they were one month ago.

I have deliberately left the UK out of this picture as most all of the population of the UK has been vaccinated and the UK is unwittingly responsible for unleashing the UK variant on Europe in the first place, which is not exactly making the Brits loveable among other Europeans right now. That being said, I am happy that the Brits are getting their house in order.

So, we are seeing real, incontrovertible numeric evidence across the board that Europe is coming out of this (hopefully) final Covid-19 wave. We are also not yet seeing any evidence that the double mutant out of India is causing a new spike in the stats, but I am keeping a close eye on it, for sure.

There's no evidence to support that.
The variant was first recorded in the UK but that does not prove it originated or was spread from here. In fact, it first being discovered in Kent where the busiest cross channel ports are located might indicate that it came to the UK from Europe not the other way around.
Britain is one of the leaders in identifying new variants which could explain why it was first found here.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, there is a massive difference between intent and perception.

    That's all I'm saying.

Oh, and there's the word unwittingly...

Also, I said that I am very happy that the UK seems to have tamped down on the virus.

I'm just miffed at the idea Europe holds the UK responsible for the B1.1.7. variant sweeping through the continent when it's the EU's initial dithering over the vaccines which is at fault.

You may be miffed about it and I respect that, but the crappy behavior of the UK Prime Minister throughout this crisis cannot be forgotten. Many Brits were just as laissez-faire about Covid-19 as sooooo many screwed up Americans who swallowed up Trump's lies. I am the last person looking to place blame, but the look is simply that many Brits were lazy, Covid-19 bit the Island in the ass and then when it horse was already out of the barn, someone shut the barn door. Who feeds into the look also takes responsibility for the look, it's that simple.

The being said, the horrifying losses that the Brits have suffered eat at my soul just as in any other land.

And yes, it's possible that the variant came from somewhere else and was first discovered in the UK. The "spanish flu" did not orginate in Spain in 1917, either. But as I already wrote, it's often the difference between intent and perception. Also, it is just as possible and probably more likely that the british variant really did start in the UK. Mutations happen when the virus is allowed to spread unfettered and that is EXACTLY what happened in the UK over many months in 2020. The science behind that one is pretty darned simple.

The USA is now on the cusp of 600,000 total C19 deaths and will likely go over that gruesome marker during the weekend or on next Monday at the very latest. At current: 599,044

Pretty sure the virus spread unfettered throughout Europe last year. The UK wasn't the worst either. France has had nearly 6 million total cases compared to the UK's 4.5 million.
I agree many people did not follow lockdown regulations but, again, that was not limited to the UK either. Even the usually law abiding citizens of Germany have been taking to the streets to protest the lockdown as recently as last month.

Trying to lay the blame on the UK for high numbers in Europe is neither helpful nor accurate.
The blame lies in poor vaccine roll out which is the main reason for France, Italy and Germany each having ten times the daily death numbers as the UK currently.

As of 2021-05-012, it was 9.8 million behind the USA, so over two months, from 2021-03-013 to 2021-05-012, India roughly halved the distance in cases to the USA. Not long from now, India, if it continues at this pace, will easily pull ahead of the USA and become the No. 1 nation in the worldwide Covid-19 case rankings.

The number of new cases seems to be dropping consistently now since a couple of weeks all over Europe, which is a good thing.
Even India seems to be getting over the peak now.
However, the Brazil case is very worrying.
The Africa Covid situation is still uncertain.

    Very good ecapsulation.

I am waiting to see what happens in India, which is still averaging over +340,000 cases per day, which is in and of itself absolutely mind-boggling.

Best case scenario would be that India has already hit its peak and is going downward. I doubt that that is the real scenario but hope springs eternal.

Worst case scenario is that another large spike is just around the bend and I am hoping that that is also unlikely, however, I cannot rule it out.

The more likely scenario is that India may be settling into a very long plateau. I think their doctors and scientists, without actually saying it, have mentally calculated that into a projection of (soon) +17,000 deaths per day, which is a true horror scenario. With such a massive population density in so many cities all over India, it could be a full year before Covid-19 has burned through the country and it is closing in on herd immunity.

Worse yet, India has just somewhat less than four times the population of the US, so if we think proportionally, an average of +355,000 in a nation of almost 1.4 billion people would correspond to about +87,000 in the USA, which is where the USA was BEFORE the big November 2020 wave hit.

I am also seeing signs of virus creep in other Asian nations (Nepal, Phillippines, Japan, Malaysia,Thailand, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Georgia, Maldives), so that continent may be occupying the news a lot by end of May into a large swath of June.

Over the weekend, I input the data for five more nations going back to 2021-04-023, so that we can see a real set of averages by EOM April 2021 for them. Those five new nations, bringing my tracking from 41 to now 46, are:

    42 - Malaysia
    43 - Nepal
    44 - Saudi Arabia
    45 - Bulgaria
    46 - Ecuador

It was necessary to do this because if current trends continue, Nepal will leapfrog over Malaysia this week and then over Morocco (currently rank 41) by next Monday. On 2021-04-023, Nepal was rank 55, it is now rank 43. That's some major motion, right there.

Three of those five nations are moving pretty fast, while two of them are slowing down. I am expecting that soon enough, the five nations at the bottom the list will be: Portugal, Israel, Morocco, Lebanon and Bulgaria. At the pace that Nepal is going, it may reach 1,000,000 cases quicker than people may realize.

You can find these five new nations in the large online excel table-set (see: sig file).

Speaking of moving up in the ranks it looks like the Netherlands will join the Top Twenty Total Cases in the next week or so.

Good morning, everyone, my laptop computer is on the fritz and going into the laptop hospital. LOL. It's looking like laptop ICU for a while.

I just got a laptop on loan for a month but the day is so full for me this time, I probably will not get to a daily analysis for 2021-05-019.

Sorry. I probably pack that day into today (2021-05-020).

    Stuff happens, nööööö

A generous dose of hydroxychloroquine, followed by a stong rinse with bleach will do the trick.
