I would bet that the overwhelming majority of those listed as "missing" are not missing at all. Someone, perhaps many people know where they are. But there are still some like former family members who don't know where they are and report that they are "missing".
There's that, but this idea that Arab Sheikh's are all like the villains from "Taken" is sort of mythical too. Most of the time billionaires have to go out of their way to AVOID nubile young things who want to get on their yachts. What gets to me are the "normal" guys who kidnap teen girls and then hold them prisoner in tents in their ****** backyards for years. I can't help but wonder what kind of home life these girls must have had that "escape" through signaling the mailman doesn't occur to them for decades and while raising children. OTOH these aren't exactly neighborhoods where the Community Association is making your life miserable either.
most of those people are just those who don't wish to be found. runaways, abused or bored spouses and those who just find their current life too tedious. you'd be surprised at how easy it is to lose yourself and how little most people care. when i was much younger i disappeared for a little over a year. a few worried that something bad had happened, others (those that really knew me) figured i'd show up whenever i damn well pleased. most really didn't care. they may have wondered for a few weeks, thought about me from time to time after a few months and vaguely remembered me after a year or so. it really is amazing how little impact most of us have on even those we consider friends or close acquaintances. most of the rest of them are dead. there are a million places to bury a body where it will never be found. when less than half of the murder cases are ever solved, does it really matter whether you're considered missing or murdered?

I knew this guy that had a wife just disappear without a trace. The police hounded, followed, and interrogated him on and off for years. Then one day she showed back up. That was probably the worst thing that happened to him.
