Will UV light kill the Corona Virus?

This assertion is made after the thirty one minute mark in this well done analysis of the pandemic from a Canadian perspective.

It does seem like there is a lot of fear mongering going on and a lack of full disclosure on relevant information that all of us should be made aware of.

Don't know the answer to the question but I do know a little about UV light and sterilization. Being that ultra-violent light is light, and that light arrives on a spectrum, there is a specific wavelength range that is needed to destroy the cell walls of germs and in this case that requires UV light in the "C" class range or from approx 100 to 250 nano-meters. I also know that a UV-C rated bulb will only be able to emit light in that spectrum range for a prescribed period of time per its manufacturing limits usually rated in hours of operation, after which time it will still appear to be giving off UV light but will have diminished in performance effectively turning it into a class "A" or "B" bulb and thus not an effective sterilization tool. Its also worth noting that UV-C light is quite harmful to your eyes and skin so take care if you're using one.

 

They sell UV sterilizers for cellphones and the like at my local Lowe's Home Improvement store.

Would you say that the following paragraphs from the article indicate that they really don't want to shine this UV light on people but instead..... want it inside ventilation systems, so that it simply ends up killing the virus without harming anybody's eyes or skin?

It's the virus inside you that is the larger problem.

 

Its all about the wavelength of UV light. Tanning beds use UV-A light at the high end of the spectrum range, around 335-400 nm, and you can safely be exposed to that light for periods of time typically 15-20 minutes but if you go too long your skin will slowly start to burn. With the wavelengths required to destroy germs, low end UV-C range, your skin would burn in seconds. So no one in their right mind would use UV-C to disinfect a living creature although sadly enough the internet is filled with bogus and unsafe products suggesting people do just that (thankfully most of them are cheap Chinese pieces of crap using UV-A bulbs so we're not seeing an epidemic of skin damage resulting from misuse).

The ventilation sterilization issue is complex because air moves fast in an HVAC system and even the narrowest of UV-C wavelengths at reference atmospheric pressure still need time to do their job in breaking down the germ cell's walls rendering it inert. To accomplish that most of these systems deploy several high end UV-C bulbs over lengthy distances in order to provide the necessary exposure time. A lot of homes have UV-C bulbs in their HVAC air handler, usually above and/or below the evaporator coil, and thanks to unregulated misleading marketing trickery many people believe its 'purifying' their home's air - its not. At best its eliminating or reducing mold build up on the coil and surrounding conduit and that's it, because the air is just moving too fast for these tiny little home bulbs to do anything for. Plus most people don't realize those bulbs have an effective lifespan of about 10 months and they never change them so in the end its basically just a useless blue light.

 

I've found that a couple daily doses of Jack Daniels everyday has disinfected my Body to the point that Coronavirus will not survive inside me.

 

And what is the big News.
UV-C will kill germs viruses and depending on long term exposure live.

We are lucky that our atmosphere is filtering UV-C out.
I flood since March my company with UV-C for 2 hours at night, have UV-C lights in the heating ducts. Aircon is swamp coolers, so no need there.
Spiders are gone, crickets and what ever my customers bring in, we find dead the next morning.
