There are people out there who care about skin color, no doubt, but not EVERYONE, and that's what you paint across the board. I SEE skin color, I just don't CARE what color someone is. I don't treat anyone differently based on a physical characteristic, which includes gender, or sexual orientation, or age. You can ask any number of people I've worked with, or volunteered with, or (40 years ago) dated. Your issue is that you believe everyone treats people differently based on what you consider to be a defining physical characteristic. I don't believe skin color to be a defining characteristic. There are some people who do, but not as many as you apparently think.
There goes the extemism again, everyone? Very often prejudice is not even conscious. You’re wonderful that you don’t discriminate but to deny that there are millions who do, is counterproductive. A sign I had in my prejudice class was, “how do you deal with a problem if you don’t know you have one?”
You need to reread my posts.... you use a wide paintbrush, hence, 'everyone'. You have only in this post admitted that there are people who don't discriminate, after 22 pages? I have said several times that there are people who do discriminate, but you continue on with your painting. That is where the real problem is. You can lead a human to knowledge, but you can't make them think...…
Your ire is sorely misplaced here. Appearance .. as in, presentation .. is OPTIONAL. Race is not. We all have a choice in how we will present ourselves. Just because I live in a trailer, does not mean I must present myself as trash. There are plenty of ways to avoid doing so, starting with my nearest charity store for clothes and shoes. Followed by a concerted effort to improve my English and my social skills. Followed by volunteering at my local university Dental School for free treatment of my 'trailer trash teeth', followed by a simple diet of wholesome vegetarian food (meat is too expensive) and a solid exercise program. Followed by giving up vices like smoking and drinking. etc etc. I can't change my race or my gender, but I can change the way I present myself to the world.
O.M.G, Ren! TATTOOS are a CHOICE, race is not. Of course people will be judged by them. They didn't have to acquire them, after all. What are they telling the world in choosing to cover themselves with ink? They are saying "FU, I don't care". That is not a person we can assume is reasonable or decent. And no, 'giving off an attitude and looking like a tough guy' is not going to be perceived as decent. Why do you think that is? It's a reflection of the person's character .. that's why. Jeez Louise, how is it that this has to be explained to you ... the expert?
No, 'millions' don't discriminate on skin tone. Very few people actually do (white people, at least. POC can be incredibly racist .. and I know that because I live amongst 'em). Most white people make the natural and necessary snap judgements on presentation and behaviour.
Pardon me, but my (very) black father-in-law obtained his law degree in the uber-white west in the 1950/60s. He experienced almost no discrimination, and no obstacles to his progress and advancement. Why? Because he behaved like a well educated, conservative gentleman, with good clean, sober habits. He also treated everyone equally. Black, white, and otherwise. And before you suggest that he must have been lucky enough to have been born into privilege .. nope. He was born to a poor rail worker and a mother who was committed to an asylum when he was still a child. His father died fairly young, and left nothing. A neighbour took pity on he and his brother, and decided to support their education - understanding that this was their only way out of poverty. The neighbour did this by closely supervising the boys, and by making sure all work was completed etc. Once the two brothers had finished high school, they were doing so well that they both obtained scholarships to study law in the west.
And there is the biggest list and that is the people who discriminate but don’t even realize they are. Please try and grow up and stop with the personal insults....you’re getting more like trump everyday. Quoting things that were never said and insulting me while holding yourself morally superior .
Luckily he didn’t live in the south and Telling us that he experienced no discrimination is an insult to the intelligence of people here. What you are saying is that he behaved a certain way and made it sound like he is the exception. I guess all those southern blacks who were denied decent schools were all bad drunks . I bet you think all fine people in the NAACP were either bums or liars about discrimination.
Being called out for sexual harassment ...like Weinstein and the millions of lesser known harassers and abusers
That was entertaining to read, especially since you have persistently accused me of things that aren't true, repeatedly telling me who I am, and what I think, and you say I've personally insulted you? Exactly what is the personal insult? The 'discriminate but don't realize they are' is presumptuous at best, that you should know someone's subliminal thoughts or actions. That is quite the thing, this 'thought police' stance. Not that it's any of your concern, but I did not vote for Trump or Hillary. So you will have to dig a little deeper to find something to 'insult' me with. Good luck with that.
I'll have to relay that piece of information to my Honduran Nephew in law, my Filipino Sister in Law, my Nigerian cousin in law, and several other mixed heritage members of my extended family.
If you can “behave a certain way” and suddenly your race is ignored, maybe race had very little to do with it in the first place... Just a thought.... Well you have one leader (white) who was a lying pos who was just arrested on welfare fraud and another chapter leader that was caught blatantly lying about racism because he was upset the law was applied equally to him. No one is saying racism wasn’t overwhelming in the past, no one is saying racism doesn’t still exist today, but if one encounters discrimination on a regular basis it is most likely due to their actions (dress, attitude, speech, demeanor).
Weinstein is being accused of rape. Men in general are being accused of nothing, so again, please explain this punishment you want to visit on men?
White privilege exists, sadly. Those who deny it enjoy it without even realizing it, because they're white and naive.
I didn't say he experienced NO discrimination. I said he experienced very little. Why are you making things up? And yes, absolutely I'm saying he behaved a certain way. So did my mother in law (also not white, whom he met at college). They were conservative, sober, gracious, and always immaculately presented. I have no idea why other black people were 'denied decent schools'. My parents in law were accepted as readily as the white students - with acceptance based purely on their marks. The college did not give a damn what colour they were. Incidentally, they both graduated in the early 1960s, before any of the protests against racism started.
Whatever 'white privilege' once existed, no longer does. We're probably at about the balance point now, and in the not too distant future, the scales will tip in favour of NE Asians.
Depends on how you define "privilege", I suppose. A White baby born with Down's Syndrome is, obviously, less "privileged" than the Black baby born with incredible athletic talent. My point is that "privilege" does not have a race and anyone who claims the opposite is an extreme ideologue. One of the greatest thoughts of Western civilisation is the one of the sovereignty of the individual - It has allowed every person to break free from the chains of the collective and "White Privilege" is a theory that, if pushed in absurdum, will result in the destruction of this wonderful principle.
