Yep, second what Smartie said. I love the smokey wood taste(mesquite or oak). Now I do like the BBQ sauce that Shorty's has it isn't sweet and it is great.

 

I think George Strait is the King too...

I could listen to them talk all day. There are also good books on Lady Bird and Lyndon that are interesting. Great reads.

 

Is it HOT? I do like spicy BBQ too. I think the molasses is like North Carolina or something.

 

Have you visited LBJ State Park? I took my youngest son there with my mom and dad years ago. It's beautiful country, and an interesting tour.

 

Mesquite has such a wonderful taste. It is really a pretty wood too neat wood grains. Last time we were in Texas we stopped and bought some from a guy selling on the side of the road.

 

Okay, gotcha! I love the dry rubbed stuff too.

 

Yes, to his ranch and the old home place. It is gorgeous country and I bought some jerky from Whittington's while we were in Johnson City. You have to buy Whittingtons jerky it is great.

 

If you ever go to the Texas Cowboy Artist Museum in Kerrville, check out the floor. It's all mesquite, laid by hand in squares. It's really, really pretty.

And, yes...it smells so good when it's on a fire, too. I grew up dodging mesquite limbs while I was out riding my horse. I never quite appreciated the mesquite tree like I do now.

No, it isn't hot just good. North Carolina and Tennessee almost same, same aren't they. I know one state is heavy on the mustard. This is another reason for a BBQ bar.. we can discuss the merits of good BBQ.

LOL @ appreciating the lowly mesquite tree. It's a good thing folks discovered they're good for something besides pitiful shade & 3 inch thorns.

When my friend from Nova Scotia visited me, she fell in love with Mimosa Trees. Another weed tree... you can't kill those things with gasoline... they're indestructible!

 

Okay, this says that Texas has 4 styles of barbecue and one of them has molasses in the SAUCE.

Same with mesquites, for sure. Angelo State University bought some land covered in mesquites (not hard to find out there), used it for an agricultural experiment to show how much water those trees suck out of the ground. They cleared the area of mesquites and within a year (I think) the water table level had raised significantly. That and prickly pear. No wonder there's so much dust out there - all the water is in the thorny plants...LOL

 

Yes, I bought headlamps from REI for reading and for walking outside at night to go to the latrine. I'm really hoping to pack as light as I can so I can take some special stuff over to her. And some toys for the kids in the area. Soccer balls and pumps for them and a basketball. Those type of things.

I have a mimosa tree that grows thru the cyclone fence near the gate in my backyard. I kid you not... it's been there for over 20 years, even after being cut to the ground, having gasoline poured on it and burned, having the roots chopped up with an axe, etc.

Every spring, it comes back. It's the THING THAT WON'T DIE!!!!

Interesting experiment with the mesquites. Must explain why they never die either -- their roots reach to China!!

No kidding! The ranchers have to burn the prickly pear off the land and it comes back healthier than ever. Same with mequites. I can't imagine how tough it was to clear that plot of land for the experiment.

I've got a sickly mimosa in my back yard that I have babied to try and get it to grow. This past summer was really hard on it, but it keeps on trying every year. Tough nuts!

 

I'll have to take a pic of the giant cactus near the road at the Cowboy Church. When that thing is flowering, it's magnificant!

LOL @ babying a mimosa. Just pour gasoline on it and set it on fire. It'll grow 10 feet next spring.
