A majority of the Colorado GOP's governing committee is expected to vote Saturday to cancel next year's Republican primaries and opt for an internal process to pick candidates in the 2022 election.

Why it matters: The move would prevent 1.8 million unaffiliated voters — a plurality of those registered in Colorado — from casting ballots in the Republican primary elections next year.

Proposition 108, approved by Colorado voters in 2016, opened the process by which Democrats and Republicans select candidates to allow unaffiliated voters to participate without registering with a particular party.

    • "Colorado Republicans are flirting with political suicide," wrote former state Treasurer Mark Hillman, a Republican in opposition to the idea. "We can’t win elections without attracting unaffiliated voters, whom Democrats shrewdly embrace. If Republicans shun them, our party — and candidates — will become irrelevant.

I've read these 2 articles twice and I'm still confused.

The GOP in Colorado wants to PICK all R candidates (for ALL Statewide and State Federal races?) without a vote by anybody in the state?

I wouldn't care one way or the other what the Sedition Party does, but Colorado allows anybody not registered to either party to vote in both R and D primaries. I guess the theory is the unaffiliated voters could cause the Colorado GOP to be stuck with candidates not preferred by Colorado GOP?

What am I missing here? Is this a good idea? Seems the Colorado GOP is split, and although a majority seems to want to do this, they need 75% to get this plan to work.... Why that high???

This is the strangest political story of the week in my book... Could this be JUST to keep that nut Boebert in office??

The GOP doesn’t think the people should vote the “wrong” way — why is this any surprise seeing what they have done with gerrymandering and forcing their will in the courts against the wishes of the people?

Lol…how quickly the left forgets the 2016 Democrat primary where Clinton won the nomination and Sanders won a third house on a lake.

It's no real surprise, but I'm shocked some think this is a good idea. At the end of the day, Gerrymandering is a successful program...on both sides...

As that editorial says, the fastest way to tick off serious voters is to limit their power to vote...

I think the editorial is right... whomever you vote for in a primary is likely to be who you vote for in the general, and if you don't get to vote for an R in the primary....... you get the picture...

It seems Republicans and Democrats are fighting to see which can be the most anti-democratic party.

Republicans seem to have taken it on as a party platform however.

I don’t share the sentiment. The right has shown they follow party policy no mater how disturbing.

Sure, but this is mostly about the "unaffiliated" voter in Colorado... D's will vote for D's and R's will vote for R's.... Where do the I's go??

To a party that lets you help preselect candidates or the party that says 'this is what you get this year"??

I'm sure it won't break 100-0 for D's, but I don't see how it can ADD to R totals....

    Yeah I know

And how often have we seen a swing because the candidates they picked stank on ice?

Isn't that how it works for the presidential nominations? I recall it being unenforceable. Even if you registered for another party you could still vote for whoever you want even if you write it in. I am not sure though because I never registered to a party.

If everybody did it the same way, it wouldn't be an issue... And I don't necessarily disagree that primaries can be a HUGE waste of time and effort at times, but it's hard to see how it helps the party not doing it statewide...

Hmmm... maybe it's some effort to save money for the general?

I liked that because it was wickedly and cleverly funny.
The Colorado GOP can make their own rules. I thnk it will be a mistake, but who knows? I think it does smell of desperation, or a need to control, which should be a Republican no-no..

Not entirely.... Go read about the 75% requirement....

The GOP normally prefers to win only @ 46% of any given vote to be considered winners.... heavens knows what they'll do with this 75% threshold...

The Republican Party is a **** show. But, pretending the Democratic Party is not after what they did to Bernie Sanders and with Biden is hilarious.

    Newsflash: Both major parties suck.

Why should we have picked the guy who got less votes? That’s how republican presidents win, not dem nominees.

Not really. You don't see the potential problem of having people who want to see the Party lose picking the nominee for that Party?

This new Party policy might be a response to the state law.

It's not often I agree with what you wrote, but here I do. They exist because the voters allow them to. And lots of money!

The GOP is pissing in the wind when it comes to Colorado. Compare the population density map with the 2020 presidential vote. Real clear, as the population gets more dense, the Dems get the advantage.
Newsflash: the population of the US isn't declining.
The Republicans need to re-calibrate, but I hope a third more moderately independant party makes it's way.

Not letting the kooky Trump and QAnon republicans pick the candidate might actually be good for the party lol
