So Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, and every other grocery chain that is evil for their unwillingness to be robbed blind has packed up and left. So now one of the most poorly managed big cities in the country thinks it can step in and replace them.

    1. The city can't afford it.
    2. There will be even less incentive to stop theft.
    3. As the people of Venezuela, Cuba, and the Soviet Union know, state owned stores suck.

A source tells me brandon johnson reached out to Greg Abbott about borrowing some of Texas' massive budget surplus. The credit was promptly denied.

Unless they can resolve why the big chains moved out no matter what they do will be successful.

Grocery stores have a small margin and can't handle the additional expenses of dealing with theft. Dollar general stores...are better set up to function in crime ridden areas...but my city wants to close Gen Dollar down in these crime infested areas...leaving people with no walkable place to buy the basics. Politicians are total idiots.

Is this missing an "un" or a comma? I don't understand why you would say this.

Theft is the reason chains moved — if they open a store it will face the same issues.

The mayor has said the crime in these areas is okay because the people are expressing rage at the injustice they've faced. The stores have responded accordingly. The stores aren't getting punished. They're still making money. The mayor isn't getting punished. Do you think he actually lives in this part of Chicago? It's the people are who are getting punished. They'll vote the same way next election and wonder why their lives still suck.

I disagree. Government controlled stores is the ultimate objective. I'm betting security will be a lot tighter at the gubmint store.

The city government would love to be able to say, "So, what was the problem with those evil corporations?"

I’ll bet city owned stores will have cops very close by if not inside.

Should run them out of the police station. Get a protective order and a load of bread all at once.

What would be the point when theft is a light charge?

Instead they need to enhance penalties for theft especially on second or third offenses.

Now we know why liberal cities are letting businesses get robbed forcing them to leave.

I guess they'll have grocery stores. They'll just be empty like they are in Venezuela.

Why would they? The city will buy the items in those stores using tax dollars they didn't have to work for. Something being "free" greatly decreases the incentive to take care of it.

The US is not Venezuela who is being sanctioned. We have plenty of food. The government does not know how to run a for profit business so it will subsidize it using tax payers money to keep it afloat. The people will end up paying more but will never know how much more.

No, they will simply put the losses on the tax payer. Or rather just go into debt year over year until it implodes.

It doesn't need to be successful. The loses will come out of taxpayer revenue.

Mayor Johnson, as a full blow communist, probably knows a lot about running a state owned company. :juggle:

Maybe it will be "a free store" where you get to pay what you think the item is worth.

Yea, you would think you should be charged the second or third time around, but the George Soros sponsored DA in Chicago doesn't think so.

Soros believes in equity and reparations, so stealing is okay by him.

That's going to happen anyway simply because of government style mismanagement.

From the same people that brought you the DMV, ...

Maybe rationing will prevent people from panic buying all the toilet paper.

Great idea. Nobody is going to steal from a city owned grocery store, especially in a city run by a woke moron. Shame on Chicago voters. The communists already tried to have government run stores. Remember the images of the long lines and emply shelves in soviet stores? ;)

Unless the city provides security, then these stores will be robbed blind and tax money will be used to restock the shelves.
