What has motivated the emergence of extremist paranoid reactionaries on the far right is their loss of status as the country transitions from a paternalistic/white society to a multicultural/diverse society where everyone expects to be treated equally.
Their natural fear of change has been exploited by demagogues into mindless bigotry and hate against those who are trying to find their place in the sun.

Well, but lets not forget Steve Nikoui, the gold star father dragged from the gallery during brandon's campaign speech and charged because Mr. Nikoui kept reminding brandon of the 13 deaths of our best and brightest in that Afghanistan withdrawal debacle. And yes, we know, charges were later dropped. Not the issue. The issue was, Mr. Nikoui's right to free speech was stepped on for political reasons.
