Alain de Botton was talking about this issue and I think he was pretty much spot on - the planes make people think about their own mortality. Everyone flies on planes these days, it could just as easily have been them. The media's sensationalist and constant reporting is really just a reflection of this, those who can see this for what it is should definitely seek alternate media. The internet is great, use it
