Doesn’t work so well, if you shoot the person for moving their arms in order to comply with the order. It also doesn’t work so well, if it is just something you say but give zero seconds to comply.

“Hands in the air” at the same time “bang bang bang”, sort of takes away the reason for saying “freeze” at all and turns a police/suspect situation into more of a mob hit.

If the choice for POC is comply and die, don’t comply and die or don’t comply and run with maybe a fighting chance, they will stop surrendering.

I see the entire issue of LE being dealt with by this administration. Qualified immunity is already being chopped at the state level in some states.

Drop the gun or knife that you are holding first, where the officers can plainly see that you did, then slowly raise your arms up. Not that hard to do. It's even easier to not run around with a knife or gun in the first place...

Wish I lived in a world where police only shot people running around with guns or knives in their hands.

What did the dispatcher tell the cops on the way to the scene of the shooting?

I will tell you. Shots have been fired in a particular area. Go to that site.

While now we know the lad tossed his gun away, he ran because he is who was firing the weapon.

    Should cops just smile?

As things will turn out, I expect the DA to charge the cop. When a black is shot, this is very common. When cops shoot and kill whites, the media does not appear to mind at all.

How many riots have taken place when whites get killed by cops?

Another gripe of mine is why is the founder of Black lives matter buying up expensive real estate? I smell fraud in other words.

It was night in a dark alley. I refuse to blame or clear anybody when all of the facts are not yet reported to the DA.
I believe even the mayor wants all facts to first come in.

Guess I must have missed a news story here. Someone got a link so I can get on the same page?

Believe I found the story, Adam Toledo?

Watched the body cam footage (do not recommend). Looks like a bad shoot to me. Even in the relatively poor quality video it’s pretty clear there is no gun in the kid’s hands at the time of the shooting. His movements were consistent with the cop’s orders so he shouldn’t have been so surprised by them to pull the trigger. Officer immediately, to the officer’s credit (kind of), rushed to provide aid. Problem with that though is if the officer believed the subject to be a threat he wouldn’t approach them so haphazardly. He would show caution until the subject was confirmed incapacitated.

Poor training. Bad shoot. Looks like manslaughter to me.

Seems the critics are all arm-chair experts. The intensity of these split-second life and death confrontations police must sometimes deal with is beyond what the average person ever even could conceive. It IS dangerous to both suspect and the cops- and when it turns bad, it is almost always the result of the suspect's reaction. When you have elements in society trying to label the police as predators, you encourage resistance and hostile reactions, putting more lives at risk.

I'm surprised that we haven't seen an entire police force quit en-masse, because their job deserves community support and the support of the whole community. I suspect a lot of cops right now no longer thing the people of their community are worth risking their lives for.

    <Mod Edit>

Virtually everyone of those who criticize police so broadly would wind up killing not only suspects but innocent bystanders if they were suddenly in that position. . IF you have not been in those shoes- the chances are you have no idea what you are talking about.

Quite a rant for what should be an unquestionably agreeable wish.

Lots of people seem to have trouble digesting common sense these days.

Common sense is a funny thing, I think. Common sense would tell me if I’m told to comply or die, complying would prevent death. Apparently that wasn’t the case here.

I would never recommend any young person become a cop. Make one mistake in your career of several decades and you could end up dead, badly injured or in jail.

With hundreds of millions of guns of all shapes sizes and firing capacities available to the public at large, is it really any surprise that those who are supposed to protect us are so trigger happy concerned with their own safety??

So private gun ownership is why police shoot people? If anything, this should unite both parties in opposing gun laws that make police the only ones allowed to carry them.

Many states do not even REQUIRE those who's house has been robbed or their guns lost or stolen to even have to report their loss???

Where is it legal for a 13 year old boy to own a gun?

The kid is not black so who cares? Only black criminal lives matter.

The kid did have a gun they have a photo of him with a gun in his hand. Most likely he tossed it while running. The cop did not know he no longer had the gun.

One life lost and another ruined and a political opportunity for the race whores and fascists. Congrats libos! You don't give a flying f*** about the kid so please stop pretending you do.

The rules of engagement for Chicago cops and in most places is that you can shoot a fleeing suspect(even in the back) if armed and if you believe he is a threat to you or others. You do not need to wait for the perp to aim at you or fire.

I'm sure the cop will make that argument.

If you are talking about the case this week with the kid, that cop is pretty screwed. The way he was talking to the kid right after he shot him was strange. I mean if fired multiple rounds at some body, they fell to the ground seizing, I wouldn't just walk up to them and casually ask if they were hurt.

According to the cop, the boy threw away the gun as he was turning and the cop did not realize he had dropped the gun until after he had fired the first shot.

If that cop is screwed, then cops in general are screwed because if they make a mistake anytime in a forty year career, they could end up dead, wounded or in jail due to one mistake. In this case, it was the kid who made the mistake, but the cop who will be blamed.

So you believe the police should kill at will and never be questioned?

Do you know what that sounds like?

The overwhelming evidence is that cops are about as far from trigger happy as you can get. 94 million plus interactions with civilians and criminals every year less than 1000 killed and the over whelming majority of those are armed shot after multiple warnings.
