This may not really belong here, but I didn't want to start a new thread. I was intrigued to see this article in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/01/parents-disarm-teen-guns-utah-school-mueller-park Extract: Police said two fast-acting Utah parents disarmed their 15-year-old son in the hallway of a Utah junior high school Thursday after the teenager brought the familys shotgun and handgun to school, discharging at least one round without injuring anyone. Police chief Tom Ross of Bountiful, a city in northern Utah, said the boys mother and father became concerned about their son Thursday morning. They went to Mueller Park junior high when they noticed a handgun and shotgun were missing from their home. Ross said the parents confronted their son in a school hallway and disarmed him. Good for the parents, but how would the boy have got his hands on the weapons? Aren't they supposed to be secured so children can't access them? I don't live in a country with easy access to guns so I've no idea what precautions should be taken.
Thanks for the post. As to your question...State laws vary but some don't have laws on how you have to store your weapons. That being said I personally believe it is foolish to leave weapons in a manner that a youngster can easily retrieve them.
http://concealednation.org/2016/11/...ills-intruder-during-organized-home-invasion/ Why wouldn't you just throw a frying pan at these guys?
It's a bit surprising that there are no laws in some States regarding safe storage of weapons. The thought of guns lying around for anyone to pick up is scary.
"lying around for anyone to pick up" is most hyperbole. The reason that we don't have those kinds of laws is that they aren't enforceable due to 4th Amendment protections. DC v Heller also prevents that kind of requirement. Like Small Town Guy, I also feel that it's foolish, and I'll add criminal, to leave a firearm where a child can access it. I bought a gun safe before I brought my first gun into my home.
Oh, OK, I get it. Is there any sanction, though, against people who are careless with their weapons and consequently cause injury or death indirectly? A similar scenario might be leaving drugs lying around instead of being locked in a cabinet.
In many cases they can be prosecuted criminally, but prosecutors are reluctant to prosecute a parent after the loss of a child. They are definitely civilly liable.
I'm glad I don't have to worry about this. Life is busy enough anyway without having to decide which gun to buy, choose the ammo, practise with it, keep it safe, and be prepared to kill someone with it as well as keeping it out of the hands of children.
The issues are the same with cars, knives, pills, poisons, bats and fists. You have things to worry about, just not guns in your world.
