Castro took power and began seizing the excessive wealth of the rich. Middle class Cubans including doctors concluded it was in their best interest to get out of Cuba with their money. So they flocked to Miami and became our main source of complaints about Castro and Cuban "communism". What else could we expect of them? Immediately, Castro declared healthcare to be a human right and codified that principle into the new structure of the new Cuban state. He declared a national goal of becoming a world-class medical and scientific power. He provided top educational opportunities for a new crop of doctors and medical professionals to replace those who fled Cuba. Education opportunities in leading foreign countries was arrange. Foreign medical experts were attracted and enticed to come to Cuba to teach the new batch of medical professionals. But in the USA an embargo and bans against any interaction with Cuban interests was in place. That was in 1960 and the early 1960s. By 1957, a new wonder drug to fight viral infection had been discovered, -Interferon. Work was underway to explore the new drug and put it to use in medicine. On average, as a country first began to participate in the research, it took a new facility a bit over a year to master and perfect the method of production of Interferon. Cuba did it in 47 days. Today, Cuba is a world leader in medical research and technology and people from all over the world including the USA go there for cutting-edge treatment, especially when all other domestic efforts have failed.
