Whatever you do, don't come to Australia in our summer! It's literal hell on earth. I wouldn't even consider late Spring or early Autumn, for the same reason. Besides, our winters are probably equivalent to your Fall, so July/August is probably the ideal time for your visit. You'll have lovely cool evenings and mild days, everywhere except our mountainous, inland, and alpine regions. You'll get your 10c at night and high teens during the day in most of the southern coastal regions. If you want proper cold and snow you'll find it .. but you'll also be able to sun yourself on tropical beaches. An Australian winter has something for everyone. An Australian summer has nothing for anyone .. unless you're quite demented and/or come from Northern Russia, and find the idea of 45c an exciting novelty.
LOL .. same. We leave ours open down to about 5c, but draw the line at zero. We don't heat the house at night, so we get the full experience
We haven't turned on our heater, yet, and we've been in this house for four winters. The lowest ever was waking up and the house was at 41 degrees, so your 5. We closed the windows and put on our sweat pants, which will last forever because we use them so little. (My favorite pair are 22 years old, now, and very little wear-n-tear.) I dread having to turn it on one day, and we will. That burnt smell is awful.
Good for you! We'd like to try going to no heating at some point, it's just a matter of practice. Friends living in colder climates don't light their fires until the house gets close to zero, finding 5c a perfectly reasonable temperate for indoors. They either keep very busy, or go to bed. Not much lounging around on sofas!

Expert calls for Australia to appoint foreign interference commissioner as China-Beijing tensions rise Key points: People in Australia targeted by foreign powers often do not report it to police An expert says a foreign interference commissioner would create more transparency about the issue Alleged political interference has been a key part of China's ongoing spat with Australia ABC news this morning. This is a good idea I think. There have been muttering a about influencing and interfering by China for ages. Chinese students have talked about intimidation agents of China. There’s a large article by the Financial Times which concerned fighting between Mainland China and Pro Taiwan protestors at a uni in QLD. There have been major instances of hacking and data theft from Unis. It gets awkward when China has poured research money into Unis and wants a return in the the form of suppression of dissidents and restriction of criticism of China. https://www.ft.com/content/52ed7fe6-c94f-11e9-a1f4-3669401ba76f

The markets now predict that Donald Trump will lose the US election. Here's how we know Last month the price of derivatives (insurance traders take out to protect themselves from sharp moves in the market) shot up, as investors believed the US election result would be contested for weeks or months. Two events have since taken place: the first US presidential debate, and Donald Trump contracting coronavirus. ...Currency markets, says Callow, were looking for Trump to say or do something during the debate to change that. However, nothing eventuated. ... As a general rule, currency markets view a contested election as creating enormous uncertainty. In times of uncertainty, the US dollar rises because it is seen as a very safe currency to hold in times of crisis. In the days that followed the US presidential debate, the US dollar fell and the Australian dollar rose — along with a whole bunch of other "riskier" currencies — which currency strategists say signal a Biden win. Interesting analysis from the ABC News.
it's a load of rubbish, the US$ fell because the Fed is printing money and keeping interest rates low
You’re probably right. The article seemed pretty convincing. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-13/us-election-markets-predict-trump-loss/12758610
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume Steve's 'customers' aren't representative of the average Chinese citizen.
Meantime, Victoria's Boffin-in-Chief finally admits what most of us have known all along. Pressed as to why when Sydney has similar daily infection numbers, COVID doesn't gallop the way it does in Melbourne, he had to concede that demographics were the key. Of course he's already crossed lines saying as much as he has, so unlikely he'll get more specific. But at least it's out in the open now - and in case most of know who he's talking about and what he's saying about them. The Vic Govt tried REALLY hard to pretend it wasn't a thing all this time, but at some point even the most accommodating are going to wonder. Of course it's not a case of 'blame the migrants'. After all, Sydney has just as many migrants, if not more. This is something else. This is about a culture of disregard. Whether that was imported or came after is irrelevant, what matters is that the conditions exist for it to flourish. Was interesting (and funny) that they tried to make it about household sizes though. Total BS. Tokyo, Seoul, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam etc all put the lie to that nonsense.
There are people who will NOT be helped. SHARK FEEDING CONTINUES https://www.yahoo.com/news/australian-beach-haunted-another-shark-175843930.html Australian beach deserted after another shark attack fatality in record year It is a week since Andrew Sharpe, a 53-year-old surfer and local businessperson, was attacked by a shark believed to be at least four metres in length at Kelp Beds. His friends tried desperately to save him, but he was pulled under the waves and not seen again. “I’ve never seen a dorsal fin that big before, not even in media footage," a witness to the attack, Ross Tamlin, said. . . Lowe said sharks also are showing up off beaches they rarely visited in the past, including those near San Diego, CNN reported. Food sources or climate change could be one reason.
