Americans worry most have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas: survey

Three-quarters of Americans agree that most people have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, a concern expressed by more Christians than non-religious individuals, according to a recent survey.

In a nationally representative survey of 1,023 adults, 84% of Christians believe that Americans have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, with 50% strongly agreeing and 34% somewhat agreeing. Forty-two percent of all Americans strongly agree with this opinion, while 33% somewhat agree…

The sentiment that Americans have forgotten what Christmas means proved prevalent among Republicans, with 88% agreeing compared to 66% of Democrats. Age also played a role in how strongly people resonated with the sentiment, as 81% of those 50 and older agreed that many have forgotten Christmas’ true meaning. …

“Christians have many different Christmas traditions and so do their churches,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, who addressed the results of the survey in a statement. “Family and church traditions are most likely to coincide for Christmas Eve services, but many evangelical churches see the highest holiday attendance earlier in December.”

Americans are right to be concerned. Way too many Americans have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Those who do still observe the true meaning of Christmas have a variety of ways of doing so.

In a leftist dominated culture we have forgotten the meaning of many holidays as a country unfortunately.

How fascinating that the article bangs on for 1200 words about Americans forgetting the true meaning of Christmas, yet fails to mention what the true meaning of Christmas is suggested to be. :confuse:

Nothing spells out the true meaning of Christmas more than buying yourself a new Silverado with money you don't have. At least that's what the commercials want you to believe. Everything for the almighty buck. It's the American way....

Well, in fairness, we don't know what 'it' is, according to Christian Post. I would have thought that little gem of information would be important context for the article.

Christmas and Independence Day are the ones they want us to forget most of all.

Those who know the true meaning of today and He who is the reason for the season need no reminders as to what it is.

    Merry Christmas.

BTW, in the article it seems that Evangelicals know the meaning of Christmas over others. :)
Any historian will easily point out, Christmas has been celebrated in numerous and ever changing ways. In fact all this hoopla during Christmas season started with Charles Dickens.

The Puritans certainly never celebrated Christmas with fanfare, and the founding fathers even worked on Christmas Day.

Christmas was stolen by xtians and was originally a pagan holiday. It celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god. It also celebrated

The tree decorating tradition and candles were a celebrate tradition to honor the god Odin throughout winter solstice.

According to biblical scholars, the month of Jesus' birth to be around the time of Tishri (mid to late September) based off the conception of John the Baptist in June.

So not only did xtians steal other cultures ceremonies they didn’t even take the time to get the month right, much less the day.

And now it is nothing more than a commercialized day where people go further into debt to buy things they do not really need.

Modern religion is such a joke it is pathetic

For many Americans, the "true meaning of Christmas" revolves around commercialism, and the observance of quaint customs that evolved in nineteenth century England and Germany, adaptations of older traditions.

There is nothing wrong with that.

It does not preclude a communal expression of Christian charity - welcoming the stranger, sheltering the homeless, feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, etc.

That is self-indulgent - unless it expressed the "true meaning of Christmas" with an enormous red bow.
