Hundreds of thousands of firearms stolen from the homes and vehicles of legal owners are flowing each year into underground markets, and the numbers are rising. Those weapons often end up in the hands of people prohibited from possessing guns. Many are later used to injure and kill.

But the great majority of guns stolen each year in the United States are taken from everyday owners.

Thieves stole guns from people’s closets and off their coffee tables, police records show. They crawled into unlocked cars and lifted them off seats and out of center consoles. They snatched some right out of the hands of their owners.

In Pensacola, Florida, a group of teenagers breaking into unlocked cars at an apartment complex stole a .22-caliber Ruger handgun from the glovebox of a Ford Fusion, then played a videogame to determine who got to keep it. One month later, the winner, an 18-year-old man with an outstanding warrant for his arrest, fatally shot a 75-year-old woman in the back of the head who had paid him to do odd jobs around her house. She had accused the gunman of stealing her credit cards.

In Gilbert, Arizona, a couple left four shotguns out in their bedroom and two handguns stuffed in their dresser drawers even though they had a large gun safe in the garage. They returned home to find their sliding backdoor pried open and all six of the weapons missing. Police recovered one of the shotguns eight months later on the floor of a getaway car occupied by three robbers who held up a gas station and led officers on a harrowing chase in the nearby city of Chandler.

In Atlanta, a thief broke through a front window of a house and stole an AK-47-style rifle from underneath a mattress. The following year, a convicted felon used the weapon to unleash a hail of bullets on a car as it was leaving a Chevron gas station, sending two men to the hospital. Two months later, the felon used the rifle to fatally shoot his girlfriend’s 29-year-old neighbor. A 7-year-old girl who witnessed the killing told police the crack of the gunfire hurt her ears. She ran home crying to her mother.

More than 237,000 guns were reported stolen in the United States in 2016, according to previously unreported numbers supplied by the National Crime Information Center, a database maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that helps law enforcement track stolen property. That represents a 68 percent increase from 2005.

“We have a society that has become so gun-centric that the guns people buy for themselves get stolen, go into circulation, and make them less safe,” said Sam Dotson, a former St. Louis police chief.

Three men accused of breaking into house, holding homeowner at gunpoint

Three men broke into a Bakersfield house Monday morning and held the homeowner at gunpoint during a robbery, police said.

The suspects stole the victim's wallet and cellphones around 5:30 a.m. in the 2400 block of Beech Street, according to police.

Officers were able to track one of the stolen phones to a vehicle near the intersection of 19th and Oak streets, police said. The vehicle's occupants were in possession of the stolen property and several replica handguns.

Shane Carr, 36, Michael Parker, 31, and Juan Delgado, 27, all of Bakersfield were arrested on suspicion of residential robbery, kidnapping and conspiracy.

Police say 26-year-old Stephanie Valles and 26-year-old Miguel Romero were caught burglarizing a home in Taylor Ranch.

When the homeowner confronted them, they say Romero pointed a shotgun at them and told them to leave or he would shoot.

Resident tied up, held at gunpoint during home invasion

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A homeowner in the 600 block of Hamblin Avenue in Battle Creek was transported to the hospital with injuries after a reported home invasion occurred Tuesday just before 5 a.m.

The male resident, 54, told police that he was tied up, held at gunpoint and beaten while two suspects searched the residence.

Police were unable to find the suspects, who fled the scene with some property.

The first suspect is described as a heavy set black male and the second as a tall, skinny male who was wearing a mask. Police believe the two fled in a vehicle.

Ocean Beach homeowners held at gunpoint

SAN DIEGO -- A pair of gun-toting robbers forced their way into a home in Ocean Beach, assaulted the residents and escaped with some of their property Tuesday night.

The two suspects knocked two residents to the ground, then ransacked the home on Saratoga Avenue near Bacon Street shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday. It was not immediately clear what was taken.

Police did not release a detailed description of the suspects but said they were wearing black clothing and had bandannas over their faces. They were last seen heading south on Cable Street.

So...let's remove all laws because there will always be people who disobey them?

That is a stupid argument, frankly.

If you do in fact argue that guns shouldn't be regulated because stupid people will still abuse them, then you must also argue that cars shouldn't be regulated because stupid people will still abuse them. Anything else would be illogical.

Oh jeez. This again.

Criminal law - laws against murder, assault, possession of a gun by felons, etc, exist to punish individuals who commit such acts.
Gun control laws, such as background checks, registration, permits, etc, exist to prevent felons, etc, from breaking the law.
As it is impossible to enact a law that will prevent someone from breaking another law, the latter set of laws are useless.
That the latter set of laws are useless is in no way an argument against the former set.
