It's just one woman's personal anecdotal account but you might want to put Nickel and Dimed on your reading list.
There's also the sort of classic, The Jungle, though maybe you are looking for non-fiction.

You may find "Atlas Shrugged", a classic by Ayn Rand, to be instructive....

It explores the almost-forgotten maxim that in the civilized economies of free nations, YOU GET WHAT YOU ARE WORTH IN THE HUMAN LABOR MARKET. No more... and no less....

I like Ramsey, especially for today's 21st-century audience, which requires simple, uncomplicated explanations and instructions.

Public schools in the United States have almost completely neglected to teach students essential basic skills required for advancement and success in nearly any workplace, and so a 'blunt instrument' like Ramsey is required to break through the thick coating of "feel-good" political nonsense two generations of Americans were drenched in by so many hyperliberal, 'socialism-lite' teachers....

Ramsey's main, recurring message is this: "Don't spend more money than you make -- always SAVE money (because 'cash-is-king'), and, avoid debt like malignant cancer!"

According to some. This not a straight forward issue, since it also involves labor markets, and the individuals themselves.
