With hoops coming to a close it leaves nothing to follow other than an occasional soccer game. With it's 2,922 games per team per season, baseball is absolutely like watching paint dry. Do any of the first 2,888 games even matter (well, it seems like they each have that many games)

I will be fascinated to watch the 2nd and 3rd season of the new breed of QB's within the NFL. Maybe even Michael Vick might have a renaissance under Chip Kelly. I like the more mobile QB's, the option, the QB run plays etc. It makes the game more enjoyable than the traditional drop back QB's.

Who do you think will emerge above the rest this season?

Do you think Kaerpernick was a flash in the pan last year and teams will be able to defend against him this year?

Of them all, I like RG3 the best and hope he is completely healed and hasn't lost a step.

Will Newton basically show himself to be a just another middle of the road QB?

Look how disappointing Freeman is to TB, is that the destiny of Newton?

And the biggest question of all...

How will Tim Tebow fare with the Patriots?!

    end sweeps
    tight end
    occasional 3rd and 2 wildcat

I like Tebow but I'd rather see Mallett get snaps before Tebow. While Tebow was getting all the press coverage at UF, Mallett was working wonders for the Hawgs with a lesser talented roster than Tebow. The kid has a rocket of an arm with laser like precision. And, at 6 foot forever, it's tough to block his passes. I've seen his height listed at 6-6, 6-7, 6-8.

    I suspect he'll be a first-rate tight end.

Baseball wouldn't be boring if it had offensive and defensive teams. Imagine a team of Ozzie Smiths out there. It's stupid to let mediocre hitters bat and mediocre fielders field. Yawn.

Some fielding plays are electrifying; others look like the fielders have been electrocuted.

No the biggest question with teams now is with all the felony stuff going on, how do they have a huddle without creating parole violations for consorting with known criminals

In the average collegiate or professional football game there is on average 12-15 minutes of actual game play.

Football is an illusory sport...those watching on television think more is going on, than is actually going on.
for example repeated slo-motion edits of previous plays...quick edit camera shots from sidelines to huddle...crowd noise, cheerleaders...play clocks winding down....long snap counts, injured players, timeouts...

    the bottom line up front?

BLUF = 12 -15 minutes of actual game play.

A football game, though seemingly non-stop in action....is not an action sport per se.

Sports like soccer, or ice hockey, have far more actual game play.

RGIII has a lot of issues to deal with...while the option style is great for some things I really do not see it being the future of pro football. RGIII is going to have to learn that all that running around with reckless abandon really does not translate into the professional game. At the end of the season I believe we will still be talking about the drop back prototypical QB, Manning (either one) Brady, Brees, Rogers, and Stafford. I have to disagree with you when you say the"rushing" quarteback makes the game more exciting, I find it more boring, the risk reward isn't there....you have running backs that are paid to run, quarterbacks get paid to pass.

all QB's have issues to deal with and also, games do evolve. As a Pats fan, how many times have I screamed at Brady to run those 4 feet when he has 20 yards of open field in front of him. Run the 4 feet, get the 1st down and slide.

I'll take the new crop of QB's and like what I see. I don't see Johnny football as being NFL caliber despite being a Heisman winner. But RG3, all day long.

I can't wait until Mallett finally gets some real play time either with the Pats or to the team which grabs him. That kid is a talent wasting away on the bench

Yes games do evolve and the way the rules commitee has opened things up for the passing game, it will still be geared to a QB that can get the ball downfield. A quarterback who runs the ball 10-15 times a game will not last in this league, that is what Mike Shannahan and RG3 need to understand, you run as a last resort or as part of a called play, the defenses will catch up.

I am not saying that the new "breed" of QB's is bad, just saying that eventually they will have to become more of a traditional style of QB. Or they will find themselves injured more often than not...(Mike Vick). I love Andrew Luck, and Russell Wilson, I believe in time these 2 will be the true standouts of the class. I respect RG3 I like some of the things he does, but if he doesn't learn to pick his spots, he will find turmoil down the road...I believe he falls into a category of High risk, High reward, which can be dangerous to build a franchise around. Not taking anything away from him, but he would not have been my first choice of that class.

I love Ryan Mallet the kid is 6'7" tall and can throw the ball 70 yards in the air effortlessly. I think if he stays with the Pats he is about 3 years from seeing the field still, while sitting behind Brady is one of the best. ( I will get into my views on Brady later) At some point you have to start looking to play, I would have been insulted if I were him and woke up and saw that my team had signed Tim Tebow, that would be an embarassment to me. So I truly see him and the Pats parting ways after this year. And me as a Cowboy fan, would not mind putting a star on the side of that kids head, and sending Romo out to pasture...

Do any of us know his true height? With the Hawgs he was listed as 6-5 and then 6-6, then 6-7. All I know is when I see him next to Brady he's more than an inch or 2 taller. I too would love to see him given a starting role on another team and replacing Romo or Freeman are possibilities. The kid is a talent and has a rocket launcher of an arm and makes good, quick decisions

I dont think Newton will be a dissapointment like Freeman.I think he'll bounce back.It was just an off year for him.

I would like to think Kapernick is a dissapointment since Harbaugh unfairly took Smiths job away from him last year but naw,he looks too good,he looks like something special for the future.

as far as vice goes? he is a lost cause under anybody.Being in prison and out of football those two years,he lost his rhythem and cant take a hit anymore.hasnt been the same.time to go with that other guy.

by the way you mentioned kapernick, how could you possibly forget russell wilson, another QB who also looks to be special? they may just go to the NFC championship game this year with him.He only tied Peyton Mannings rookie record for most touchdown passes in a season. This kid is something special.

I personally don't like Kaepernick, but mostly due to the fact he plays for the 49ers and I like the Seahawks. My dislike is enhanced by his off the field stuff, but at the end of the day, he's a good quarterback, and whatever flaws in his game that there are have been, and will be, camouflaged by one of the strongest teams in the league, including great protection by a top 5 Offensive Line and great RB in Gore. They made Alex Smith look good. They'll make Kaepernick look good, whether he personally falls back a step or not.

I too respect RGIII a lot. If he can stay healthy, he'll have a big impact. That may turn out to be a big "if" though.

I'm really pulling for my man Russell Wilson. Just like Kaepernick, he's got one of the strongest supporting casts in the league, and I think he'll do just fine. Am really looking forward to tomorrow's game!

very true about RG3.they are stupid to even think about starting him for at least the first half of the season.you cant just come back the next season and play lie it never happened.I broke my ankle a year ago and while i can run now,i doubt that i will ever be just as new as before and were just talking running here,he gets takled and takes a hit in the wrong way,his career is bye bye.no way should they even be considering him playing this year.thats just plain stupid.

I agree on wilson.I dont like kapernick cause of all his tattoes he has.he has no class.Wilson has far more class and I am a fan of pete carrol so i became a seahawks fan when he joined them.

Manuel has done everything so far to earn the starting job, but apparently he's out for the rest of the preseason with a knee injury. So the chances of him starting the opener aren't good.

I gotta say that I thought that once teams got a feel for Kaepernick that he wouldn't have nearly the success that he had last year, and I think I was right. :) Even though he has my Packers number! :(

Really? I actually think that Wilson and Luck are #1 and #2 as far as quarterback fundamentals go of the new crop. Wilson also has the prettiest deep ball I've ever seen. Always high, always arching, and always close to his receivers' hand.

Now what I will say is I don't think that Carrol is using his arm strength like he could. Doing a lot more deep, play action passes off of bootlegs and such I think would be much more in Wilson's wheelhouse. I don't necessarily like the new generation of young "quick" QBs not because I think the skill set is dumb (although Vince Young and Mike Vick I feel, proved that it was able to be combated quickly) but because I think that it's misused.

I think that their legs should be used more to extend the play a la Big Ben, not to run for those chunks of yard, because they put themselves at an enormous risk for injury. Extend the play, turn it into backyard football, make it a game to see whose receives can beat whose DBs

As long as Wilson remains mobile and can scramble. At 5' 11" he will have issues as a pocket passer given the size of defensive players these days

Fortunately for Wilson is that he has Pete Carroll as his coach who came from the college game. He is more inclined to tailor an offense to the strengths and weaknesses of his QB vs trying to shoe-horn a run and gun QB into a traditional, drop back QB position. Name me 3 NFL coaches who you think could have success with Johnny Football as their QB. I can only think of one and he is a rookie coach, Kelly.

The most exciting sport is Ice Hockey, but it's been pretty disrespected by the OP. Figures.

Brees is only an inch taller than him and look what he does. You just gotta build your team around the disadvantage. But, I'll admit, I'm a bit of Wilson fanboy.

As far as Johnny Football, his footwork is dismal. He makes wow plays. But I wouldn't put him on any team in the NFL. Plus isn't he like 150 lb? :p
