Belgium Consumer Confidence Falls To 15-month Low

Belgium's consumer confidence declined for the third straight month in August to its lowest level in 15 months, the National Bank of Belgium said Friday.

The consumer confidence index dropped to -9 from July's -4.

Consumers have become more pessimistic about macroeconomic developments, the survey found. This was reflected in rising fears of a future increase in unemployment. The corresponding index rose sharply to 17 from 8.

Sentiment regarding the general economic outlook also deteriorated due to the recent financial market turbulence. The relevant index fell to -13 from -6.

Meanwhile, households' prospects for their own financial situation improved marginally in August. The index edged up to -1 from -2. But, the expectations regarding their saving capacity fell further with the corresponding index dropping to -4 from -1.

It would appear that fears for the EU's economic woes is spreading from the PIGS to the other countries. I would be worried too based on the solutions being discussed.
