How come in certain cities like Miami or Houston or on NYC etc you have to know a different language to get some jobs? Ain't that disrespectful towards american citizens that in order to work they have to learn a foreign .Language why not make in mandatory that they learn English to get ahead and the fact the discriminate and only hire there own race but for some reason its not considered racist
First and foremost businesses want to make a profit. And if they operate in an area where many residents, visitors and tourists speak another language other than English they want to hire someone who is qualified to serve the customers. Businesses have the right to set their own qualifications to ensure they hire someone who can meet the company's needs.
Yes but they locked out native people of that country out the job market. So u have immigrants gaining wealth and native people locked out of opportunities in there own country.
It's called business. If I run a store in Miami, I don't need somebody who doesn't speak both English and Spanish (and I say this as somebody who can't speak Spanish). Are you saying it's disrepectful to Americans because the CIA hires people who speak languages other than English? Of course not. This is the same thing. Miami has a lot of Spanish speaking tourists. I don't know about you but it's stupid to require tourists to speak our language. It's not racist. It has to do with basic skills. If you don't like it, move to a different part of the country or learn to speak Spanish.
Fast food restaurants ,nursing, retail blue collar jobs etc. Being bilingual should not be a requirement to get any job. Construction for example when an immigrant group gets a job they only hire there own people
So its okay when people get jobs to only hire there own race and the reason its because they only want people who speaks two different languages so people who only speak one language should just move around the globe when a different race who only hires there own take over
Pushing people out of neighborhoods and taking over blue collar jobs that was worked by all different ethnicities. And then put there own race in there and only hire there own people and the excise is because they are bilingual seems like a slick way of being discriminatory. Why should poor people in Miami and NYC who need blue collar jobs not get any because they don't speak new comers language
Being able to communicate with your customers does help if you're interested in keeping your job. If you're not bilingual, then I guess you'll just have to work somewhere that this isn't a valued skill set. If you want to work in Miami at a job that requires working with the public, being able to speak Spanish is as essential as being able to speak Japanese in Waikiki. If you can't, then you best look elsewhere for employment.
Has nothing to do with race. Has to do with usefulness to the business. In certain areas, if you can't speak Spanish, you can't help most of your customers. For certain jobs in certain areas, that's a necessity. It's business. If you are unqualified for a job because you don't speak the language that the customers speak, so be it. You need to get qualified or leave.
It's a skill. If you don't have the skill, you shouldn't get the job. If you think this is an issue, then you should start pushing the schools to teach Spanish.
Thank you. Not sure why the others struggled to do this. Obviously in certain areas it’s helpful to have employees who speak the language of some of its customers. Even for those trying to learn English it can be tough to communicate. Having bilingual employees helps with this.
Learning Spanish isn't that difficult. You can do an 3 week immersion class or 2 in South America for about $1200. Make a vacation out of it.
English should be the official language of the United States. Period. Back in the 50's and 60's we were taught foreign languages. Particularly French, Spanish and Latin. It made perfect sense. I use Spanish almost daily. I answer my phone in French and I have a friend who is Russian so we speak Russian. I don't think anything of it. Someone in business is going to do whatever is necessary, legally and morally, to make money. After all, the purpose of a business is to make (as much) money (as possible) for the owner(s) and/or stock holders. If someone opens a business where "your language" isn't the norm then you're going to learn to communicate to that area. Of course if you're doing it to try and force people to accommodate to your thinking then you're going to lose. They'll go somewhere else. That's how it works.
My high school French teacher tried doing that. It made for a very quiet class, and nobody knowing how to speak French. Immersion is the way to go about it, but there's a lot more to it than that, and at the end of a few weeks, you'll be able to order tacos at a restaurant. You won't be able to read the whole menu, but you will be able to figure out that carne asada means meat of some kind.
