I am sick and tired of going to a thread, which has a well thought out argument and by the 2nd page all the posts being something along the lines of "well you are a liberal, or a communist or a Nazi or a conservative" Insulting the posters does not add to the debate! why can't people just debate the subject and not attack the poster? I am getting sick of this.

I for one relish the idea of having someone call me a Conservative. I can understand why someone that calls himself/herself a commie, a liberal or a Nazi might get offended. Politics is a strange game to play in that I contend we need those titles so as to carry on debate with the opposition or enemy if you will. If it makes you feel any better, I won't get offended if you call me a red-headed, freckle-faced Irish Mick.

Attempting, without success, to create a very well thought out argument from you, I would say.

As long as the moderators allow references like "*********" I don't see a change. Your goal is admirable, but not probable.

Well excuse me. Does this mean I'll soon be facing the wrath of the moderators and sent to some detention room?

People here are horrible about feeding trolls.

If you don't like the ad hominems reply to someone elses post.

I often write up a reply and think: they aren't going to want to actually click on that link, so they aren't going to reply. I should have left that out, and called them a nazi instead.

Because the topics we discuss can often elicit an emotional response. Frustration, anger, disappointment, fear...

I'd say just ignore it, or develop thicker skin when insults are aimed at you.

I doubt it, the mods on here never really do anything unless you directly insult someone or threaten someone...

I will never do that because it gives the poster a sense of satisfaction when they have created an insult which they believe has hit the mark when no reply is forthcoming.

If I were a mod, I would ban any user who posts threads that add nothing to a dicussion....Trolling should be agains the rules...

You do realise that would result in most posters being banned and those who were not would soon lose interest because every discussion would be so thorough that people would end up with a headache.

If discussion was the nucleus of seriousness, why can't politicians manage it in Congress, Parliament and anywhere that a genuine exchange of ideas would create beneficial results.

So what do you do? Reply with more stupidity?

I think it's better to reply with an intelligent response, or just ignore them. If they're really that big of a d-bag, they'll get banned eventually, or perma-ignored by most everyone.

No we can't stop the attacks. But we can minimize them through education. First of all 99% of the posters on this forum do not know what an ad hominem attack is. Secondly, 85% of all posters on this forum type faster than they can think. Therefore, they may be saying stuff that they didn't give much thought to, and then quickly forgot that they said it.

Then again, the falacious arguments are fun to use, especially to get under the other poster's skin. You'd have to make exceptions for irony or sarcasm. Or ban irony or sarcasm.

    This is a stupid thread.

I'm actually glad the mods are so lenient, or disinterested... too busy or whatever.

Though I did get a few post deleted the other day... it was one of those cases where rules were enforced where typically they're not... just rubbed someone the wrong way.

    It occurs only among Americans.

Foreigners come here for rational debate. Which surprises and annoys many Americans here.

Oh please, you're one of the worst offenders here, with your non stop anti-American labeling and insults. Look, you're doing it again in your post!

How can you live being such a hypocrite? I would feel really hollow inside, personally.

Most New Zealanders are too loaded on drugs or alcohol to know the difference.
