Interesting bit on how Canadian airports are inefficient and uncompetitive with their US counterparts.

Key Quote from the CEO of Pearson airport in Toronto:
"Mr. Eng argues that while reducing various government fees — such as
airport rents, security charges, and fuel excise taxes, will certainly
help — the federal government would be better served focusing on a
national strategy to increase the number of passengers flying to the
country. This would include the elimination of red tape for passengers
transferring onto other destinations, streamlining the customs process,
and making the country a focal point for travel in emerging markets like
    India and China."

Streamlining the customs process sounds like
something that would make the Americans nervous. But the other steps
    seem sensible to me.

Is it worth making this a priority in Canada?

Having flown out of Canada, where I went through US customs (in Canada) is hugely better than going through US customs in the US. Entering the US requires a long time in que, which has nothing to do with security (Japan is the only other country I have been to that takes as long to clear customs).

To your point, Canada would have to lower standards a lot to get the level of "security" the US maintains along the southern border.
