The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday recommended that gatherings of 50 people or more in US be cancelled or postponed over the next eight weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic.
As Americans struggled to come to terms with how to change their daily habits, the CDC released new guidance, explaining that large events could help fuel the spread of the disease.

Are you supportive of this decision?

I find it hard to imagine that the States will go through with the Primaries on Tuesday.

    But, who knows?

In any event, I feel like it is a great move.

Better to do 8 weeks now, instead of 6 months later.

    Thoughts?

Since covering one's mouth is just far too demanding a task for certain jackasses among us I'd agree densely packed crowds are best discouraged.

Democrats in March: "We must cancel or postpone the primaries because of COVID-19! It's for our safety!"

Democrats in November: "Cancel or postpone the election because of COVID-19? Trump wants to declare himself Emperor!"

    I think 50 would be a problem. :(
That would mean no flying, no trains and subways.
While it makes sense from the standpoint of the virus it might be almost as effective to try the 6 foot rule and just reduce things.

50 incurs less risk to the participants than the 250 or 500 that others recommend. I support it.

Seems arbitrary. If one has been following this thing and all the 'projections' anything over a handful is too many...

AWESOME for calling it out when it happens.(I honestly hope we have solutions by November, but if we don't this is the exact line that will be taken. And we know it'll be taken.)

Where are they coming up with 50? Why not 26?

You need to check the forum.

Posting duplicate threads is not a good look.

    It's already been said HERE.

This is what Andrew Jackson said:

Andrew Jackson beat you to it about twenty minutes before you posted this duplicate thread.

In the future, please check the forums.

Looking forward to the LW making three or four threads on this very subject. :roflol::salute::roflol:

    And as I said earlier:

Little chance it will happen, but if it does and the same standard applies in the general election, look to LW-ers who applaud postponing the primaries now to riot if the election is also postponed for the very same reason.

The statistics and bar graphs I've seen indicate that 49 is in a very, very low risk category.

I suppose that 5 year categories could have been used to obtain more precise information but what is available indicates low risk for the entire categories until 50.

My thoughts are that if the main goal of all of this is to get rid of the virus or slow it down, it's not going to work in 1 month (public school closure), 8 weeks, or 6 months because it will continue to flare up until it either runs its course or a vaccine is created. It took a year and a half for H1N1 to go away/create a vaccination. We were never sanctioned off or closed down for that and you see how long it took. My oldest son graduates in May so if this continues, I'm not sure what they'll do. Mail the diplomas I guess.

So basically, I don't agree or disagree. My only thought is that if the end to this is to end the virus then 8 weeks won't do the job.

That is the goal of flattening the curve -- to make it stretch out longer and cut off the peak, so as not to overwhelm the health care system. Just about everybody is going to get the coronavirus eventually either way. But we all not gon die.

Yeah, mail the diplomas and save the cap and gown rental under these conditions. Sad, but health has to come before pomp and circumstance.

And maybe do the walk at the 5 year class reunion, if there's enough interest and demand for it.:)

We have medical scientists for this, why do you lay it all on Trump? Do you remember how long it took Obama (since we're placing unknown viruses in the hands of sitting presidents) to create a vaccine for H1N1? A year and a half.

Lol, that's about how I feel, too. Who the hell is gonna go around counting heads and monitoring to make sure there are less than 50 people?

I don't see it flattening the curve in 8 weeks. If it does, it'll go right back up when everyone starts gathering together again. I had to get a temp check when I dropped my son off at daycare this morning. They're checking our temps when we come and when we leave. Since it's daycare, I don't mind a bit. But I DID see one of the moms, who lives about a mile from me, packing her kid back into the car when I pulled up. If she has a fever due to CV then I guess my small town 25 miles away will finally have a case.

What if we have 300 people on the same floor in our office building? We’re not huddled together in a “group”; everyone is in their own office or at their own desk.

Not a bad recommendation.....since a decent amount of the population depends on the Govt to tell them how to live and think, it's very important we remind folks how to not try and get sick. FYI take a shower daily, and wash your hands.

I hope Trump does leave it to the experts, Trump made a mistake, making this all about himself in the beginning and trying to claim mission accomplished so early on

Kaiser Permanente started testing a vaccine this morning in Seattle on the first guinea human. But Dr. Fauci said if it works it will be 18 months before going to the public. Seems like it should go faster than it did nine years ago to me.

We really should consider postponing the election.
