CIA was in Cahoots with Gaddafi

The overthrow of Gaddafi has brought together strange allies, but few stranger than Abdulhakim Belhaj, the military commander of all rebel military forces in Tripoli, and Nato. An Islamist whom Gaddafi tried to have the US list as a terrorist, Mr Belhaj says he was tortured by CIA agents after being arrested in the Far East in 2004 and later handed over by them to Colonel Gaddafi for further torture and imprisonment in Libya.

Mr Belhaj, the head of the military council for Tripoli, who led an Islamist guerrilla organisation fighting the Gaddafi regime in the 1990s, told The Independent in an interview that he had been directly "tortured by CIA agents" in Thailand after being first arrested in Malaysia.

If true, his story is evidence of the close co-operation between the CIA and Colonel Gaddafi's security services after the Libyan leader denounced the 9/11 attacks. After his stint in the hands of the CIA, Mr Belhaj was kept in Abu Salim prison in Tripoli. He says: "I was in prison for seven years during which I was subjected to torture as well as solitary confinement. I was even denied a shower for three years." Other Libyan Islamist prisoners have related how they were sometimes taken from Abu Salim to be questioned by US officials in Tripoli.

Released from prison in 2010, Mr Belhaj, who had military experience from fighting in Afghanistan against the Russians in the 1980s, became one of the most effective rebel military commanders. He is said by diplomats to have played a crucial role in the capture of Tripoli at the end of last month, and is highly regarded by the chairman of the Transitional National Council (TNC), Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

The US government armed Bin Laden, and Saddam why would you be surprised to learn of a link with Gaddafi ? At one time or another US governments have supported every despotic regime on the planet going back some 100 years. Dont be surprised my child.

As for torturing people the US government supported and was activly involved in the torture of people under the G. Bush, Junior regime.

Are you claiming the US chose Khadafi to oust Idris? Idris was VERY friendly towards the US and Europe.. Remember the oil companies that all began operating in Libya in 1953.. or Wheelus and Tobruk?

Secret files: Gaddafi had spies in rebel camp
Double agents worked the highest levels of the rebel movement, according to intelligence documents found by Al Jazeera.
    Jamal Elshayyal 01 Sep 2011

Deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had spies at the highest levels of the rebel movement at least until the fall of Tripoli, according to a top-secret document that appears to be a briefing for Libyan intelligence mastermind Abdullah Senussi.

The briefings, found by Al Jazeera in a sealed envelope on Senussi's abandoned desk at the Libyan intelligence service's headquarters, detail key weapons sites across the Western Mountains, with a focus on the pivotal town of Azzawiya, which proved to be the rebels' gateway into the capital.

One of the spies appears to have provided Gaddafi's forces with maps and identified National Transitional Council (NTC) commanders who were to lead the attack on Ghazaya and Azzawiya, together with the forces and vehicles the rebel leaders had available.

The documents also suggest that the Libyan rebel fighters were using refugee camps on the Libyan border set up by Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait to smuggle in weapons and pick up trucks.

Gaddafi's spies (whose names Al Jazeera has redacted) suggested that the rebels had the permission of the Tunisian prime minister and his army chief to use the camps as a base.

"There are 4x4 vehicles in the Qatar, Kuwaiti and UAE camps, equipped with automatic weapons and hidden under tents," reads one document. The agent who wrote the briefing also singled out the names of NTC leaders, suggesting they be targeted for assassination.

"I have drawn up a plan of which rebel commanders and NTC leaders should be killed. This will strike fear within their ranks and cause disunity between them," reads the document.

    Spies around the world

In return for this information, the double agent expected the Libyan government to meet his three demands – by providing a luxurious car, preferably a white BMW; paying out an 'exceptional' amount of cash; and supplying him with a Thuraya satellite phone to use for 'sensitive' phone calls.

Gaddafi's spying was not limited to double agents, however. His spy network was also able to intercept highly sensitive emails, including those from NTC chief Mahmoud Jibrail.

One such email appears to be from the foreign ministry of Cyprus to leaders in Benghazi, outlining a planned visit by their foreign minister to the NTC’s stronghold.

Other documents found in the Intelligence Headquarters suggested that Gaddafi's secret services were not limited to Libyan borders.

Government officials all over the world – in Libyan embassies – were used to spy on expatriates supporting the opposition from abroad.

One document, provided by the embassy in Malta, suggests that a number of Libyans who allegedly met with Goma Gomati (now the ambassador to London) should be kidnapped.

Now thousands of secret documents are in the hands of rebels -- and some of them could incriminate the rebel leaders themselves.

What will become of those leaders – and whether information contained within them will trigger reprisals throughout the troubled country – remains to be seen.

    Margot,

My child please at least try to give a "straight" answer for a change. You have a habit of answering questions with more questions and this is a sign of insecurity - be forceful , and decisive my child.

Yes... its too much to offer up the facts and invite people to THINK.

Do you have any idea or knowledge about Libyan oil history or the two AF Bases and their importance?????

Do you know why Khadafi made so many mistakes and who his oil minister was and where that oil minister came from???

Jalil opposed Khadafi's method's for many, many years and was only complicit in the Bulgarian nurse debacle.

If you think someone is trying to keep the New Egypt busy, then you have a perfect excuse... like conjuring up Al Qaeda, the CIA and the Salafists.

In Gaddafi's case , facts prove otherwise, he was from the start self-created -unique and certainly NOT a US creation.
It helps to dig in the archives to refresh one's memory for relevent facts
such as the following from 2006 (hope you see the irony )

"-Why Gaddafi's Now a Good Guy By Scott Macleod

"When I called on Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi in his Bedouin tent last year, he was at pains to explain how he and President Bush were on the same wavelength. In all his years as a bad boy in the eyes of the West, he said, Libya was simply doing what Bush did when he invaded Iraq. "Bush is saying that America is fighting for the triumph of freedom," Gaddafi said between sips of tea. "When we were supporting liberation movements in the world, we were arguing that it was for the victory of freedom. We both agree. We were fighting for the cause of freedom."

At the time, it may have sounded like the typical ramblings of the Libyan leader. But now, a year later, Gaddafi and Bush do apparently see eye to eye. On Monday, Gaddafi accomplished one of history's great diplomatic turnarounds when Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice announced that the U.S. was restoring full diplomatic relations with Libya and held up the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as "a model" for others to follow.

Rice attributed the ending of the U.S.'s long break in diplomatic relations to Gaddafi's historic decision in 2003 to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and renounce terrorism as well as Libya's "excellent cooperation in response to common global threats faced by the civilized world since September 11, 2001."

I dare say the most incriminating documents will "disappear"

IMO - the revolting NTC 's leader will have to import tons of Hougari Frankincense + Myrhh from Oman-Yemen to disguise/overpower , their and Gaddafi's regime's stench for years to come.

In the long run perhaps the best solution is to follow the example of former Yugoslavia.

Jalil was hand picked as a US puppet.

Jabril and Jalil will be ousted soon enough by the rebels and the US is not going to be happy about that.

It's a bit like the White House appointing Omar Suleiman as caretaker VP after Mubarak.

The Libyans are not going to accept the WH choice.

    Wait and see.

It's like watching Cairo 28th-11th all over again and the state security offices being ransacked and evidence burned:mrgreen:

AJ's Shamayel managed to get his hands on some stuff I expect and we will get to read that.

What you will see is once it settles down a bit actual witnesses coming forward rather than documents.

The good thing about Libya compared to Egypt was their police was not infected.
You will have the police coming forward making statements and revealing stuff on intelligence etc.

We will get to see who was talking to who and what was going on behind the scenes and behind the double faces.

When and where was he hand picked as a "US puppet"? You can make that claim against anyone, anytime.

The US cooperated with Osama bin Laden as part of the fight against the Russians in Afghanistan, and not for one second longer, and Osama soon started taking an anti-American stance which intensified during the Gulf War.

Saddam Hussein came to power on his own and later entered a cozy relationship with the USA (especially when he attacked the Islamic Republic of Iran), and then fell out of it with his invasion of Kuwait.

Muammar Qadaffi came to power on his own and was effectively an enemy of the United States for the next 3 decades. Only when he decided to rehabilitate his relationship with the West (not just the USA) did relations thaw and even then they were rather tentative and nervous.

That looks like three very different relationships, and perhaps only with Osama bin Laden can you say the USA created him, but that was for a specific purpose for a short duration of time (he just wasn't polite enough to go back to his family and enter the construction business).
