Frankly I'm surprised that there wasn't already a thread about Chappelle's monologue on SNL Dave Chappelle Uses ‘SNL’ Monologue to Echo Kanye’s Antisemitism It was Chappelle’s first time hosting SNL since he came under fire for a slew of transphobic jokes in his latest Netflix special The Closer. And before he even took the stage at Studio 8H for his monologue, there was palpable anger on social media and the threat of a boycott from the show’s writers, especially given that this season SNL has its first gender nonbinary cast member in Molly Kearney. But while he made a point to avoid the topic that has seemingly consumed him for the past couple of years, Chappelle may have dug himself an even deeper hole by—deliberately—defending the essence of Kanye West’s antisemitic rhetoric through comedy.
I have never found him funny, but I did decide to check out the monologue Besides not being funny, it was just dumb. I'm Jewish, not offended in the least by it, but as I was watching it, I knew that it would cause a backlash
Well that explains it. Dave Chappelle switched ‘SNL’ monologue between rehearsal and live show Dave Chappelle did a “fake” “Saturday Night Live” monologue during the show’s dress rehearsal, sources said, and then switched his material for the live show. A source told Page Six: “Dave does a fake monologue during the dress rehearsal, because he doesn’t want [‘SNL’ creator] Lorne Michaels, or anyone else, to know what his real monologue is.” Kind of a shame he felt that was necessary.
