Again people buy stories all the time probably eighty percent never see the light of day. Everyone sells a story thinks it will be published mostly they aren't. The first thing any literary agent will tell you is be damn careful how you package the rights to your story. If you get it wrong not only is there a better than average chance that your story won't be published but you wan't be able to publish it your self. Sorry but that's how the literary world operates.

The first is pretty much SOP. When you sell exclusive rights you turn over the ownership of the story to whomever you sold it to. They now own it and it is up to them whether or not to publish. She should at least have talked to a literary agent, in which case she would have been told you don't sell exclusive tights to anyone if you can help it because you lose complete control of the story the minute you do that.
