These two were just ignorant, untrained fools attempting to go from Hawaii to Tahiti. Big time liars as well.

Another example of how having a bunch of great gear is pretty useless if one isn't trained to use it.

Their sails worked, however, they lacked basic navigation and seamanship training, so they let the currents move them.

They were not trained, and too stupid to know to get the training. One women just came along for the ride, having never sailed before.

They only survived because they didn't get swamped from bad weather, and had enough food and a water purifier.

    TSTL.

It is my understanding that their rigging was damaged such that they feared raising a sail could bring down their mast and possibly sink their boat. The mast and rigging on that boat could weigh a half a ton, and if it collapsed, could cause a hull breach. Staying afloat is more important than anything else. I don't second-guess their decision to not raise a sail, even though the whole story seems more and more fishy to me.

At lease you got in a cheap jab at women. They should have stayed in the kitchen, right? In spite of your efforts to make them look bad, you only exposed yourself for what you are.

Yeah there's a lot of inconsistencies coming out from this whole thing. Very strange.

They made themselves look bad. No need to get so pissy at those of us pointing it out.

Their mast could have had some damage but they still could have raised the sail partially, tie in a reef, and that would probably give them enough headway to have steerage. Very poorly prepared and the video's sure didn't show any one that was going to be dead of starvation in 24 hours. As others have said: there's something fishy here.

And, yes, many women are capable of operating a boat. A good friend of mine is a woman who has her Captain's license and used to be in the charter business.

“At first I thought she was totally reckless for shipping out during a storm, and she didn’t wait for a weather window,” Linus Wilson, author of several sailing books, including “How to Sail Around the World Part-Time,” said. “But she just made up the storm.”

As the vessel floated out at sea, the women said they made distress calls every day using a very high frequency radio (VHF radio), which has a range of 25 miles.

“The whole notion they called for 99 days on VHF is ridiculous,” Wilson said, adding that when the women passed by islands or other ships, the VHF signal would have been received.

However, Appel said in her statement Tuesday that, unbeknownst to them at the time, their distress calls were only reaching as far as 1 to 2 nautical miles because of a faulty antenna."

You have it backwards. The thread title is pissy and I just pointed it out.

You must be a Liberal, it was a joke. If it hadf been men, I would have been just as nasty, or worse. Besides there is an indication that they are worse than my sexist joke; it seems the Navy found an operational EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) on their boat that they failed to activate that would have brought help. It now looks like they some sort of publicity stunt to get a book or movie deal.

I already acknowledged that it was a joke. I just pointed out how it made you look. You guessed my political party incorrectly. Would you like to try again or would you rather just ask?

I wonder where they got the money.

Appel claims a career of "American Entrepreneur in Sustainable Agriculture" and "Treasurer for Hawaii ASLA", which is a landscape architecture group. Neither one seems like an actual career. She's also joined the "Hawai'i Actors Network".

My guess? Rich girl turned wannabe reality TV star.

The other woman, Tasha Fuiava, can't find any details. There's a Facebook page, but I think it's a different woman.

Probably a good investigative reporter is gathering the facts. It should be a most interesting story when it comes out.

If you knew it was a joke then you should have acted like it was a joke.

I am not interested in how you think I should have reacted to your bad joke. I was raised by a single mother and have raised two successful daughters. I pointed out your cheap shot and now you are trying to save face. It like putting a cigarette between your toes after putting your foot in your mouth.

No one believes you would have posted the same thread title if it were men:

Captain Smith was after a record. To get that record, he drove the Titanic at full speed, at night, across iceberg infested waters. Yeah, some men shouldn't be allowed near a boat.

    P.S. I don't smoke.
