Where are all these Muslims who are "offended" by the English flag? And I mean average people in the street, not egotist hate preechers and government cap-touchers. The fact is 99% of Muslims in this country couldn't care two hoots about the English flag or the Union flag. The people realy offended by it are the middle-class snobs who detest their own country and its people.

As for newspapers, they're controlled by the government and used to kick up hatred and fear between sections of the public in the name of divide and rule.

Conspiracy grunt! The political parties are much more likely to court the newspapers (particularly given the right wing bent). See, for example, New Labour and the Sun

Papers decide who wins elections. And newspapers don't report facts. They report whatever the govermnment has been told to tell them by their big business masters. These aren't my words, they're the words of ex-journalists.

As the governments everywhere spy on anyone who believes in democracy, the media rule the politicians and the government - and the elections, unless the mugs have suddenly noticed what is being done. At the moment, the UK looks set for the reintroduction of serfdom and divine right, but only till the climate kills us all in a year of two.

I agree with lolo, although I think "climate change" as its now called is just another excuse for governments to ponce yet more money off us.

But George Orwell 's book "1984" wasn't a work of fiction, it was based on the insider knowledge Orwell had access to. And now we're seeing it all come true, just as he warned us - perpetual wars going on, everyone being watched and monitored, free speech being eroded. Of course it happens gradually over a long time, so most people aren't even aware it's going on. Or refuse to believe it. It's known as "tiptoe totalirianism". It creeps up on people and then one day they wake up wondering where their rights and freedoms have gone.
