Disclaimer: This thread is political because the Evangelicals in question are using political means in order to further their own political agenda. https://newrepublic.com/post/174950/christianity-today-editor-evangelicals-call-jesus-liberal-weak That our ELECTORATE is now made up of a segment that is is DISSING Jesus for being "woke" is a sign of how FAR from their roots the Xtofascists have come. This loyalty to an orange false deity can only have occurred because they will excuse any and all CRIMES as long as the Felon2B delivers on their nefarious agenda to undermine our democracy and replace it with a THEOCRACY. Xtianity for them is ALL about CONTROL! They DEMAND absolute control over ALL branches of our government and will settle for nothing less regardless of the means. Xtofascists are an existential threat to our future!
That is absolutely stupid from a Christian standpoint. Jesus is neither liberal or conservative, and his teachings is that all are welcome, not just the few. There is even a Christian song I heard many years ago, but cannot remember the name, where a homeless person was forbidden from entering the Church and hearing the Good News. And even Jesus, who was sitting beside the homeless person, said they don't allow me in either.
For decades now, non-conservatives have been saying that, if Jesus came back today, so-called Christian conservatives would reject him. It's both hilarious and depressing to see that happen with his teachings. I'm an atheist, but I at least see the value of the "love thy neighbor" type of kindness that he's said to have espoused. Watching evangelicals, the largest sectarian group in the US, start to turn away from their literal savior is disconcerting. It really shows that the "Christian" part of "Christian conservative" and "Christian nationalist" is a superficial marketing ploy. Sort of like when companies brand something as "natural."
For many people Christianity of a cultural thing, and in their hearts they believe more in political parties than Christ.
Seems odd to me to argue about the political leanings of a fictional character but hey….to each his/her own.
this highlights the difference between spirituality and religion. Jesus taught truth and spirituality, with love for all. The church started with this message, but quickly kept only the bits that allowed them to control the masses, and threw out a lot of the most important spiritual teachings. Then a Roman emperor formalized it, with a hierarchy of men that stood between the people and the gates of heaven. religion without the spiritual message is just a tool to manipulate and deceive, usually for political power here on earth.
How exactly are you ( or the author) concluding that "turn the other cheek" is a liberal ideal? I could understand if you were trying to argue that liberalism might favor more welfare which could be argued to be more Christ like, but "turn the other cheek"? What is the argument for claiming that is more Liberal than Conservative?
