Just got back from watching a great movie - "Red Dog"

    http://www.reddogmovie.com/

Trouble is - Since it is only what can be called "Iconic Australian" I am not too sure if anyone overseas will really "get it" like we do.

The humour is definitely Australian (but they have thrown in enough Fart jokes to keep the Poms happy) and there is even a "Seppo" in it (Rhyming slang - Seppo = Septic tank = Yank the nick name that dates back to the second world war at least)

But the humour is definitely Australian with our own flavour of story telling. It is beautifully filmed in an area of the world that is just breath takingly gorgeous. The story will make you laugh and cry and the music is fabulous with some classic songs back tracking on it.

I suppose I could watch it. Was it made by the same guy who made those other movies you guys are so famous for? The RingLords or whatever?

Nope. Can't remember who the director was, but whoever he is, he's a genius.

I saw this movie twice, because it was so good. It made me laugh and it made me bawl my eyes out at the end, it was incredibly sad.

Its a very Aussie kind of movie, but I think the Americans would like it as well - I think the America man in it is Josh Lucas? Not sure what he does but I'm pretty sure he's the Yank dude in it.

I thought animal kingdom, which is an australian movie, was pretty good as well. I have netflix so I watch a lot of foreign films. I saw another aussie film a couple years ago and can't remember the name. Its about a guy and family who owns some land but another person is trying to force them off. It is right next to the ocean. Its kind of a comedy and for some reason I keep thinking surfboards and maybe a game show they watch as a family? I will be trying to figure it out all night now.

That's it!! That movie was hilarious and a great movie. I think it was based on a true story.

PS...it was an airport they lived near and not the ocean but how you figured it out from my description I do not know. Good job though...I might rent it again.

Along the Rabbit-Proof Fence was a great movie, too. I'll watch for this one on cable. Love foreign films... even subtitled!

Man....could I give you a HUGE list of GREAT foreign films and most are recent. From french and german to swedish and korean.

I would watch "tell no one"
    "mesrine part one and two"
    "baader meinhof complex"
    "the man from nowhere"
    "I saw the devil"
"girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl who kicked the hornets nest and the girl who played with fire"

Thats just off the top of my head. I have seen some good movies coming out of hollywood here and there but the rest of the world has really caught up and came up with some very original ideas for movies. You get used to the subtitles.

Rabbit Proof Fence was okay. Not the best movie I've seen, but okay.

My favorite Aussie movie is Muriel's Wedding, though, although after seeing Red Dog...I am not sure which film I like best!

EVERYONE knows "The Castle":p It is an iconic Aussie flick

Worth watching twice simply for the visual add in jokes you might have missed the first time (eg look at how the wife has "decorated" the TV with paper flowers)

Another iconic and funny Aussie film is "strictly Ballroom" If you have EVER been caught up in a club committee full of self important people you will love this film

Strictly Ballroom is a great film. It got a lot of people into ballroom dancing after its release.

Rabbit Proof Fence was one of those movies that stays with you. It was tragic, but beautiful at the same time... and a great illustrator of human determination.

LOL, I was watching a subtitled film French film yesterday afternoon and fell asleep during the last 30 min. An hour & a half of reading and I still don't know how the dang thing ended!

Thx for the list, headhawg, I'll try to catch some of those... if I can stay awake! ;)

Gallipoli is probably the best Australian movie ever made starring a young Mel Gibson.

A realistic war move, long before Saving Private Ryan there was Gallipoli....it pulls
no punches about the reality of war.

Go back a few years for a movie called "The Odd Angry Shot", staring comic genius Graham Kennedy and many others. It is about the Vietman War and is a top flick.

Find a moive called "The Some of US" Jack Thompson and Russel Crowe (Crowe plays a gay Rugby player) great flick, one of my favorites.

If your real lucky you might find an ABC TV mini series called “Blue Murder” about criminals and police corruption in the state of New South Wales in the 70’s/80’s. Still banned and never been shown on TV in NSW. Probably my favorite piece of OZ TV.
