Feinstein, other Democrats accept donations from architect of Arizona immigration law

Just 10 days after the Arizona legislature passed SB 1070, a much ballyhooed law aimed at reducing illegal immigration by empowering state and local law enforcement to suss out undocumented residents, California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein wrote a stern letter to Attorney General Eric Holder criticizing Arizonas new law.

We write to support your thorough review of the recent immigration law enacted in Arizona a law which is troubling on many levels, reads the April, 2010 letter that Feinstein co-signed with fellow Californian Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer. This state lawis already proving to be polarizing and hurtful.

Fast-forward seven months: Feinstein has turned her attention from governing Arizona by proxy to discouraging the folks back home from legalizing marijuana.

What else has changed? According to OpenSecrets, Feinstein, who is not up for re-election until 2012, accepted a $2,500 campaign donation from one of the architects of SB 1070 the Corrections Corporation of America. The Democratic Party of California has also accepted money this election cycle from CCA $15,000, to be exact.

But while CCA and Feinsteins interests stood opposed in Arizona, in California they have seemingly become aligned. The former San Francisco mayor and 18-year Senate veteran has vocally opposed any and all drug-law reform efforts dating back to 1996, when Californians voted to legalize medical marijuana. As the co-chair for the opposition committee, Feinstein has become one of the most vocal critics of Prop. 19, the California ballot initiative which would legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana.

Corrections Corp. of America stands to lose money if Prop. 19 passes, especially if the law doesnt herald the end of civilization as we know it. According to records available on the California AGs website, more than half a million Californians have been arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and roughly 135,000 have been arrested for felony possession over the last 10 years. Tennessee-based CCA only housed 8,000 California inmates as of April, but its lobbying to house more. Were legalization measures to catch on in other states, prison populations would decrease significantly, possibly to the point where CCAs much-touted overflow relief services werent needed.

CCA has also given money to California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown and to state Democratic parties and candidates in California, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, and Washington State. At the same time, the company has also given money to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and has lobbied for inclusion in the Homeland Security Appropriations bill for provisions and funding related to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.

My, my, my....It wasn't long ago the libs were saying Jan Brewer was in bed with Corrections Corp. of America because they gave her money. Surprise! They donated to Dianne Feinstein AND CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR HOPEFUL JERRY BROWN! Looks like it was a foursome. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if I found out Boxer's got some too. We need to toss out the Dinosaurs like Brown, Feinstein and Boxer. It's these old school career political hacks on both sides of the aisle that have gotten us where we are today. Remember this on Tuesday.

Study: 100,000 Hispanics Left Arizona After SB1070
November 12, 2010 | A new study suggests there may be 100,000 fewer Hispanics in Arizona than there were before the debate over the state's tough new immigration law earlier this year.

BBVA Bancomer Research, which did the study, worked with figures from the U.S. Current Population Survey. The study says the decline could be due to the law known as SB1070, which partly entered into effect in July, or to Arizona's difficult economic situation. The study released Wednesday also cites Mexican government figures as saying that 23,380 Mexicans returned from Arizona to Mexico between June and September.

U.S. census figures from 2008 say about 30 percent of people living in Arizona are Hispanic, or about 1.9 million. The state is appealing a ruling that put on hold parts of the law, which would have allowed police to question the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegally. mmigrants are heavily employed in Arizona's construction industry, which has suffered -- along with the rest of the state's economy -- in the economic downturn.

In that and other studies released at the Global Forum on Migration and Development in the Pacific coast resort of Puerto Vallarta, BBVA Bancomer Research -- part of the financial group of the same name -- estimated that probably about 720,000 Mexican migrants were unemployed in the United States when the study concluded in late October. The study also predicts that remittances -- the money sent home by migrants working abroad -- won't recover their peak value of about $26 billion until 2012 or 2013.

Remittances fell in 2008 and 2009, largely because of the U.S. slowdown. Remittances are Mexico's second-largest source of foreign income after oil exports. Nearly all of the money comes from the U.S., where nearly 12 million Mexicans live. The research center also estimated that remittances were dwarfed by the amount of money Mexican migrants paid in taxes in the United States -- about $53 billion in 2008.

Feinstein: 'Wiped out' by scandal
9/12/11 - Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she was wiped out by Kinde Durkee, a well-connected California Democratic political operative who served as treasurer for hundreds of state, local and federal campaign committees.

Durkee was arrested by the FBI on Sept. 2 on allegations of fraud surrounding the diversion of more than $670,000 from the reelection committee for a California state assemblyman, and a growing list of California Democrats, including Feinstein and Reps. Susan Davis and Loretta Sanchez, now appear to victims as well. I was wiped out too, we dont know how much, said Feinstein, indicating the losses in campaign funds could run into hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of dollars. Feinstein, who is up for reelection next year, reported just over $5 million in the bank as of June 30, according to disclosure reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

She did my 92 campaign, my 94 campaign, my 2000 [campaign], my 2006 [campaign] my gubernatorial campaign, Feinstein told POLITICO on Monday, describing her long relationship with Durkee. I trusted her implicitly. Feinstein said she and her campaign staff have been unable to access all their bank records at this point because Durkee alone controlled access to the account, which has made it difficult for them to assess how much money is gone. Its very painful, Feinstein added.

Davis is missing more than $250,000 from her reelection committee. Loretta Sanchez has already declared her $379,000 campaign war chest was nearly wiped out by Kindee. The Los Angeles County Democratic Party reported that it lost at least $200,000, while California Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D) may be out as much as $677,000. And dozens of other campaign committees have yet to declare whether they suffered losses as well.

Durkee has not been formally accused of any wrondoing in connection with missing funds from the campaign accounts of Feinstein, Davis or Sanchez at this time, but Justice Department officials allege that Durkee moved money from one of Solorios accounts into an account she controlled and then wrote a check for $125,000 to Sanchezs campaign shortly before last Novembers congressional elections. In a letter sent by Davis on Sunday - first reported by the San Diego Union Tribune - the six-term House member told supporters that we have been robbed!

Upwards of $250,000 in campaign funds have been stolen from us. Our treasurer was arrested and is accused of funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars (maybe millions) to herself from our campaign, and the campaigns of many, many others, Davis stated.

What does she mean by "wiped out"? She's up for re-election in 2012. If wiped out means her campaign funds, it's great news. She needs to be put out to pasture.
