In Bishkek, a military court has sentenced in absentia the ex-President of Kyrgyzstan, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, to 24 years behind bars on charges of abuse of office.

His brother, Zhanibek Bakiyev, who was in charge of the state guard service, got life in prison.

Bakieyev was toppled in the April 7th 2010 revolution. 97 people were killed during the standoff between his supporters and the opposition in Bishkek central square on that day.

The former President fled Kyrgyzstan. His brother and he are currently in Belarus, which will not extradite them to the new Kyrgyz authorities.
