I love to reply to decent posts. Even poor posts I am known to reply to.

When you are thoughtful, I use this @yourname to get your attention. Then at least you got a chance to see my comment to you.

It is direct and not intended for other posters yet if they reply, they too might get a reply if it is polite and on point.

That's why my replies are generally short. Most people aren't going to be interested in everything I have to say about this or that, and plenty are just too stupid to justify the effort of going into any detail.

Oh that would have been a fun club to be part of--monopoly boards flying everywhere ;)

My problem with online chess is that once you have people on the defensive, they just quit in the middle of the game, especially once you have their queen cornered. Even if you are going to lose, it is still good manners to play it out because a lot of people really struggle with sealing the deal at the end, needing the practice.

And they don't sign off. So you're waiting for them to move and you don't know they've quit until the clock runs down. It really annoys me. That's the kind of crap ISIS pulls.

I think a better forum etiquette question would be 'when should you not reply in the first place?'

If they have an ugly avatar.
If they're known to post and run, never bothering to read the replies.
If they use words like "*******" or "Trumpster" or any other disparaging remark which shows they care not one wit for opinions from the other side.

#1 - If you can't say anything good, don't say anything. - There are times when a reply is just so blasted stupid, it screams for an insult. I found it best just to walk away.

#2 - Know when to hold em, know when to fold em... - Some arguments and discussions have a 'shelf life.' They get stale and boring. I'll pass. Also, see: necro posting

    #3 - Sealioning - Bad faith argumentation.

#4 - Single issue posters - Abortion, gays, God/god and guns are topics that seem to attract certain people whom have hard core beliefs they never sway from. Arguments there are like rocking in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but doesn't get you anyplace.

In response to your OP, I have found the use of a very simple phrase to be effective in both ending discussion and allowing internal closure.

    "Have A Nice Day:smile:"

The best poster here. That's all you need to know.

    8)

I wouldn't know, I've got avatards blocked. However, there are a few creepy usernames out there, and they get on my i-list right quick.

BTW, your i-list is your best friend, in case you didn't know.

Not necessarily. If I were to call you a leftard, I'd do it not because you were a leftist, but because you were posting like a retard. As for "Trumpster", that doesn't strike me as disparaging per se. If you were a brainless Trump supporter I'd call you a Trumplodyte.

I use OP. There is no etiquette to replying or not. It is not rude to not reply.

It's okay to ignore anyone at any time. This forum is primarily for personal entertainment.

I am guessing that "people your age" are high school, maybe even college aged. As you become older and more mature you will learn not to take things so personally or seriously.

I'd better not reply or the cops will get me for a pedophile charge chatting with underaged girls.

    Ahhh darn.
I was about to invite you to my house in the suburbs.

"Hello Mr Grataxe, I'm Chris Hansen from MSNBC. Why don't you just have a seat right there"

"So tell me Mr Greataxe, just what where you planning on doing with Anna?"

"Care to explain the Trump hats and yard signs in your trunk?"

If you start a thread with a topic that others find interesting, the thread will keep on going without you. That is, you don't have to answer unless a post directly addresses you or you have something interesting you want to add. Also, too, if the originator of the thread answers every freaking post, it can quickly get seriously boring.

Speaking for myself, I want to hear lots of different points of view. I hate it when one person posts over and over and over and.... When that happens, I want to stick myself in the leg with a fork to relieve the monotony of the responses.

The most interesting threads, imo, are those that take off on their own. That is, someone posts an idea then others run with it. Lots of people get involved.

    OP

Wow I thought AnnaNoblesse had come back when I first saw this revived thread title. Only yesterday I was wondering what happened to her; she was one sassy gal.
