An 18-year-old college student from Georgia has been sentenced to four months in prison in the Cayman Islands after breaking the British Caribbean territory's COVID-19 protocol while visiting her boyfriend for a jet skiing competition, according to her family.

Skylar Mack, a pre-med student at Mercer University, left for the Islands Nov. 27 after testing negative for COVID-19 at home, her grandmother, Jeanne Mack, told CNN.

When Mack landed, she was given another COVID-19 test, which came back negative and she was told to remain in isolation for two weeks. Instead, she decided to attend her boyfriend's jet ski competition two days later.

18 year of American college student flew to the British territory Cayman Islands to watch her boyfriend in a jet ski competition. She tested negative before flying and negative upon arriving. Told to say in the motel room alone for 2 weeks. Instead goes to the outdoor beach to watch the competition. Reported. Never tested positive. Put in PRISON for 4 months. Could have been 2 years. The normal punishment in the Cayman Islands is community service.

This is why we don't travel to other countries. Most have intensely authoritarian governments and Americans are singled out for extremely harsh punishment because they are Americans. The UK and EU countries are no different in regards to singling out Americans for harsh legal treatment.

As harsh as it may seem, she knew the rules and she broke them. At some point, people have to accept personal responsibility for their actions.

The Caymans rely heavily on the tourist trade - if you have some dumb-assed American running around the island spreading disease, then
you stand to get hit with huge financial loses in the future. It was incredibly selfish of the girl to pull that stunt. 4 months sounds like a light sentence.

The issue is what law she was breaking. Whether the law wasn't needed in this particlar instance isn't the issue. She broke their law after having been very well informed.

If what you are suggesting is that she challenge the legitimacy of the law of a foreign country, I just have to laugh.

Let's remember that tests are not perfect and I see nothing to indicate that she was isolated for the full time required to assure she wasn't infected.

She's just one more US born and bred scofflaw - a case in point of why COVID is totally out of control in the USA, and NOT in the Caymans.

And, I pointed out that two tests does not mean she can't spread COVID.

So, that and given that the charge is about COVID is clear evidence that your question is no more than snark.

Maybe she should have followed the law rather than making up something else.

Or, maybe you believe foreign countries should take medical advice from an American tourist.

    False..

There is a known false negative rate for all existing tests.

Plus, being asymptomatic does not mean one can't pass the disease.

I think you are missing out a lot by not traveling. Our greatest passion is to travel but I digress. I totally support the Cayman's throwing this girl in prison for 4 months. I am just surprised there are so many democrats that support illegal visitors to our country breaking our laws yet they are on the side of the Cayman Island on this issue. When you go and enter a foreign country you are subject to that country's laws. Immigration laws are a perfect example. We have immigration laws and they should not be circumvented because the person entering does not like them or thinks it is unfair.

I do not care about what ever test, good or bad ones.
The rotten spoiled kid was told to stay at home, she did not.
Got nailed and moma and papa could not bail her out.
    Again?

    Well deserved, I would say.

You've visited the entire USA? How many hours, days or weeks does it take you to read thru all the laws of another country before visiting it?

People go to other countries thinking they have the same rights as in our country and that is completely wrong. Not only do they not have the same rights, but in most countries will be very harshly punishes specifically because they are American. Then when they get locked up they want our government to do something about it.

Don't you think all BLM, Antifa and all other people protesting in violation of orders should be throw in prison for months? Certainly Pelosi and Chris Cuomo should since they are perfect hypocrites.

Just chiming in - I'd have them in prison for more than mere months.
