Politicians and pundits are saying "I wouldn't take my family to Sochi." Or similar statements, obviously advising world citizens to not attend the Olympics at Sochi because of terrorist threats. I say screw the terrorists. We don't let them dictate our Olympics. Go to Sochi. Be aware. But enjoy yourselves. And if the terrorists do succeed in attacking there, then we will deal with them. PS. Obama, be prepared for an attack on Sochi. No blame game this time except for the terrorists! We can use it to unite with Russia against them. It will be a big mistake for terrorists to attack the Olympics, and Obama, you should have your team working on the dialogue to unite Russia in our war on terrorism, if these idiots succeed in killing innocents.
i think the gay players from the usa making a spectacle event, is making the terrorist more mad more then anything else. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wor...otester-olympic-torch-relay-article-1.1584514
I can't understand why some American politicians are saying not to go to Sochi, unless they are doing it for political reasons...which is very, very rotten. I wouldn't blame Russia for not retaliating in some way. They have spent fifty billion dollars on the games and twice as much on security as did Britain and Greece. If Russia finds that it has lost money because of propaganda by our politicians, it's going to be the end of the games...that is unless they do what they should have done a long time ago, and have them where the original games were held in Greece. This way the facilities would be permanent, and the costs wouldn't be so excessive.
Remember when a terrorist blew up (*)(*)(*)(*) at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996? The world didn't panic then. Russia did not have warships docked and ready to evac its citizens. Talk about being overboard US.
I'm saying don't go overboard. The terrorists are getting what they want if we fear them. Do the opposite of what they hope to achieve is what I say. And this isn't hypothetical anymore; terrorists are guaranteeing an attack, http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/terrorist-video-threatens-sochi-winter-olympics-21588786
Those guys are dead and were hoping others were going to be inspired by what they did. That doesn't guarantee an attack. Although it wouldn't surprise me that someone would want to use the world stage to ruin Russias olympics.
Uh, see the above video, and they have more. I'd say terrorists who have recently carried out attacks in Volvograd, guaranteeing more murder of innocents in Sochi, is making a spectacle. And I don't care what speech makes the people in this video angry, go to Sochi, pack the stands. Do not fear them, but be aware, and resolute.
By these guys, I mean the terrorist group. Not necessarily the 2 guys they show who are dead. According to the vid, the group is guaranteeing an attack.
I believe that Russia has some pretty stringent security measures in place & I've read that Putin is very concerned and has pulled out all stops to prevent terrorism.
I am confident he is. And I think he understands our common enemy, which is why Obama should seize it as an opportunity to rebuild our relationship, and fight this war on terror. I posted the OP in haste, after hearing reports of Senators and others advising not to go to Sochi. Immediately, I felt something off in this advice. That would be want the terrorists want. We should be thinking of how to do the opposite of what they hope to achieve. In every aspect of what we do.
There are 30,000 troops camped outside the city. Russian pride is on the line. Terrorist generally like their targets unsuspecting. If I was a betting man I would throw down a lazy $100.00 nothing is going to happen
I hope not. But I want those stands packed. I don't want their rhetoric to affect the games in that way either. They are trying to maximize whatever gains they think they made with the Volgograd attacks. Our leaders should not allow them to. Telling people not to go to Sochi is giving them more than what they already got from Volgograd.
Oh I think they will be filled. Anytime you consider attending the Olympics concerns have to be in the back of your mind. Having been in Sydney for 2000 - The security forces make no bones about their presence, but do little to take away from the incredible event. If I had tickets for these games or the resources to purchase tickets I would not hesitate for a second to go and cheer on the competitors and enjoy a slice of Russian hospitality
Funny...I do not seem to remember there being advertised threats by nut jobs, several bombings beforehand by said nut jobs, or civil war taking place in Florida. I'm also pretty sure things were pretty calm in the United States at the time.
So what, every time a terrorist organization makes a video threatening an attack on a major event, we don't go? We may as well kiss the Olympics and other major events goodbye then. I say attend, despite the attack. And if an attack happens, continue the games. Do NOT cancel.
Well, if you were saying that the Russians were going to be prepared for anything, that's one thing, but saying "Go to the Olympics where there's probably gonna be an attack!" - I'm thinking that's not the best argument you can make. "Come for the Olympics - Stay for the attack!" I doubt you'll be seeing THAT on billboards anytime soon.
I guess I'm communicating with 2 different audiences in the same paragraph/thread. One is us, the people. The other, is our leaders.
I love the way the terrorists say the attacks will be in return for all the Muslims being killed in the world. Hey terrorist guy I have news for you, the Muslims being killed are being killed by other Muslims, or haven't you noticed?
The fear in Russia is, with so much security concentrated in Sochi other places might become vulnerable to attacks.
I wouldn't go to Sochi. If there are terrorist there intent on causing trouble, I believe they will. No matter what Putin says.
If I had the time and money I'd go, but I'm saving up money for other trips. Threats of terrorism don't scare me.
Folks, don't forget that also you have a good opportunity to visit a great tourist cluster in the North Caucasus. It is not very far from Sochi. Fortunately the winter Olympic games came to this region and not to cold Central Russia, Ural or Siberia.
